“Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

We stumbled across this place as our usual 'Lake District' hotel was full (well, it was a Bank Holiday weekend!)The reception staff were very helpful and as all the family rooms were occupied, offered us 2 adjacent rooms at no extra cost. A very nice gesture, which I didn't need to accept as our room had a HUGE bed which all 3 of us could get lost in, and to be honest, I wouldn't leave my 7 yr old alone, even though he is going on 30. The rooms are lovely. Very clean, quiet, comfortable and spacious and (as we found later) 5 of them have patio doors to the beautiful gardens.
The bar and Dining Room were pleasant and well presented with plenty of room between the tables, even though the Hotel was pretty busy. Food was excellent and reasonably priced at under £70 for 3 course Dinner with wine (and Lemonade) for the 3 of us. Children's menu was the usual favorites, but freshly made and well received. Chicken Goujons instead of 'Nuggets', Home made 'Fish Fingers' from fresh fish. All cooked with the same care as the 'Adult' menu.
Although the Briory Wood is mid priced on the scale of things, it punches way above its weight in terms of comfort, service and friendliness, all the staff were fabulous and Margaret, the Breakfast waitress was a star. Nothing was too much trouble and she was always there with fresh coffee and more toast if needed. Although the excellent Breakfast was the usual hotel fare, it was all available on a 'Mix and Match' basis and I'm sure if you wanted anything special, you would only need to ask.
The only minor points were that the Bar had run out of Draught Beer and for some reason (may have been my lack of technical ability) we couldn't get BBC on the TV. Neither of which caused us any disquiet and I only mention them so the review may be honest and complete.
I rarely give an 'Excellent' rating as I believe there is always room for improvement. This place, on this visit, was truly Excellent and it seems that our Lakeland address has now changed for future visits.

Room Tip: Try a room with garden access.

Dear Silvascoop,

Thank you for your review of the Briery Wood Hotel. We are really glad you enjoyed your stay with us.
Being friendly and helpful to all our guests is a top priority of all the staff members here and we work very hard to maintain our high standards.
The chefs in the kitchen work hard to make sure our food is the highest quality throughout the day!
Since your review our maintenance and housekeeping teams have solved the problem of the BBC channels and they are back on!!
Again, thank you for your excellent review and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.
With kind regards,
Rachel Connolly

Just returned from a weekend break and thought id give this Hotel a mention. Friendly Reception staff to greet you when you arrive is always a good start. The Room and bathroom were very clean, and the bed was very comfy. Really good choice of breakfast which sets you up for the day. The grounds of the Hotel are well worth a walk around to view all the shrubs and flowers in a wonderful setting. Good location for exploring Bowness and Ambleside. We would recommend this Hotel to family & friends Thank You again Steve & Karen 28/8/12

Recently stayed one night and will be back for more! Wonderful peaceful location with friendly staff and excellent food. Our bedroom had the most comfortable of beds and the bonus of a quiet terrace on which to watch the birds and drink in the solitude.

Just returned from a weekend break and cannot praise this hotel highly enough. I suffer from health problems after massive abdominal surgery 12 years ago and also have Coeliac disease. We asked specifically for a room with a bath as bathing helps to reduce some of the discomfort that I have. We were given a very well appointed room with a whirlpool bath and a fantastic shower. The bed was so comfortable that we dozed off within minutes of arriving - almost missing the main purpose of our visit. We were enveloped in soft comfrotableness for our entire stay. The chef accommodated my dietary requirements and the food was excellent - we had the best steak on the English side of the Border!! The staff were very friendly without being intrusive and seemed genuinely interested in us. We will go out of our way to return to this hotel in the future.

Great hotel in a great location. It had an old world charm while having nice modern bathrooms etc. The staff are fantastic. Moved me to a room to the back when I could hear a slight fan noise from kitchen(I'm a very light sleeper).
I will be back I'm sure.

Dear Rae_Phil,
Thank you for your review of us here at the Briery Wood, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us - we enjoyed having you! The team like to receive feedback from guests - it helps us to keep improving the service that we offer & anything we can do to ensure our guests all have a relaxing time and a good night's sleep is never too much trouble.
The Briery Wood is in a great location I must agree. We are close to so many attractions, as well as the fells & lakes, so you can be as close or far from the action as you like. We love the fact that we can close the doors on the hustle & bustle and take in the tranquility of our surroundings here.
The team here work very hard to ensure that a high level of service is shown to all guests during their stays.
We are genuinely interested in our guests & get on well with each other too, which is reflected in our manner and the comfortable, welcoming atmosphere around the hotel.
Once gain, thank you for staying with us at the Briery Wood, we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us & we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future.
With kind regards,
Jennifer Braithwaite,

Just returned from a two night stay for the Great North Swim. Well documented appalling weather conditions but the welcome, service and support could not have been warmer or brighter. Roger and his staff are exemplary in dealing with constantly changing circumstances and managing each update with efficiency and a willingness to be as helpful as possible.

Thank you JacyMerseyside for your kind words - we appreciate all comments & compliments that we receive. Our team loves to hear when we are doing a good job - it makes us strive to do better & better for our guests.
The weather was truly appalling over the Great North Swim I agree! But we did our best to keep spirits up & everyone seemed to have fun in the end. The changes in the circumstances of the Swim were a challenge to deal with, but we all did our best to keep everyone informed & to help in any way that we could.
Our warm welcome & service sets us apart & we genuinely enjoy spending time with our guests.
Thank you again for your kind comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future.
