We stumbled across this place as our usual 'Lake District' hotel was full (well, it was a Bank Holiday weekend!)The reception staff were very helpful and as all the family rooms were occupied, offered us 2 adjacent rooms at no extra cost. A very nice gesture, which I didn't need to accept as our room had a HUGE bed which all 3 of us could get lost in, and to be honest, I wouldn't leave my 7 yr old alone, even though he is going on 30. The rooms are lovely. Very clean, quiet, comfortable and spacious and (as we found later) 5 of them have patio doors to the beautiful gardens.
The bar and Dining Room were pleasant and well presented with plenty of room between the tables, even though the Hotel was pretty busy. Food was excellent and reasonably priced at under £70 for 3 course Dinner with wine (and Lemonade) for the 3 of us. Children's menu was the usual favorites, but freshly made and well received. Chicken Goujons instead of 'Nuggets', Home made 'Fish Fingers' from fresh fish. All cooked with the same care as the 'Adult' menu.
Although the Briory Wood is mid priced on the scale of things, it punches way above its weight in terms of comfort, service and friendliness, all the staff were fabulous and Margaret, the Breakfast waitress was a star. Nothing was too much trouble and she was always there with fresh coffee and more toast if needed. Although the excellent Breakfast was the usual hotel fare, it was all available on a 'Mix and Match' basis and I'm sure if you wanted anything special, you would only need to ask.
The only minor points were that the Bar had run out of Draught Beer and for some reason (may have been my lack of technical ability) we couldn't get BBC on the TV. Neither of which caused us any disquiet and I only mention them so the review may be honest and complete.
I rarely give an 'Excellent' rating as I believe there is always room for improvement. This place, on this visit, was truly Excellent and it seems that our Lakeland address has now changed for future visits.
