“THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2011

After staying in Bowness hotels for many years my wife and I decided to try out the Briery Wood after passing it for many years and promising to try it out. At last we decided to give it a try and booked a three day dinner/bed and breakfast stay. What have we been missing all these years? This hotel is certainaly a hidden treasure between Bowness and Ambleside.
The hotel retains many of it's original features, the grounds are magnificent, the reception is pleasent, the rooms are spacious, roomy and very pleasent with excellent bathrooms and classy toiletries and towels.
The meals from wonderful breakfasts where you can take a choice of your liking (including porridge or continental) and where your request is cooked on ordering (no buffet pre-cooked) food in this hotel.
Dinner is a joy, take your choice of wonderful fine dining with excellent food.
The jewel in the crown to add to this review is 'the staff'. Nothing is too much for them and they arrive with a smile and attitude of 'we are here to help you' and nothing is a problem.
What is also pleasing is the timing between courses and there is no 'Hovering' by a more senior member of staff such as a Manager or Senior Waiter.
This is a Hotel not to be missed, yes it is between two tourist centres but having the food and such staff, Bowness and Ambleside will not be missed.
This Is The Jewel In The Crown of The Lake District.
We have stayed in some of the best hotels in this area and this is by far the best.

We thought this hotel a little different than the norm. The staff were helpful and it was good to see a Manager with a good sese of humour who seemed interested in making ones stay enjoyable and comfortable. We hope to visit again soon.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights and had two lovely ground floor rooms with doors opening onto the beautiful gardens, which was great as we had the dog with us. The rooms were lovely and were cleaned daily. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and meals were delicious. The atmosphere at the hotel was relaxed and welcoming and the staff were really friendly. Margaret was especially helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely stay here again.

A beautiful hotel in gorgeous surroundings. When we got inside the hotel, it was even better and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. A spacious comfortable family room. Good choice of breakfast and nothing was too much trouble. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel for families with children or couples wanting a quiet, romantic break.

Very nice stay. The Breakfast was the nicest hotel breakfast I have ever had. Everything was homemade, even the jams. Beautiful porridge, all freshly cooked to order.

The room was comfortable though at the back of the hotel with no view and slightly damp and musty. This was due it appeared to the room being below floor level. We did not complain as we were there for just a night.

Nice shower and lovely eco friendly toileteries.

All Lakeland hotels are dear so this offered good VFM. Lovely staff, well trained, who could not do enough for you.

I stayed with my hubby, and 2 children - 13 & 10 and stayed in a family room for 2 nights. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were made to feel so welcome and comfortable. The room was large, with a superking bed and 2 camp-beds - plenty of room. It had a flat screen tv, small table with 2 armchairs, dressing table and stool, hairdryer, and a bowl of sweets which the kids loved! Staying at the hotel is wonderful, we ordered our drinks at the bar, sat down and within a couple of minutes canapes were served - olives, prawn toast, cheese sticks, mini quiches to name a few. Our evening meal order was taken and we left to relax in one of the sitting rooms whilst our meals were made. The food was fantastic, 3 courses - the sticky toffee pudding is pure heaven. Coffee or tea was served in the sitting room with homemade chocolates - couldn't eat them all, were too full of good food! The garden was lovely, nice tables to sit out in the sun on the patio through the french doors. Brilliantly situated - 5 mins to Ambleside and 10 mins to Windermere. Will DEFINITELY stay again - we were made to feel so welcome and fantastic value!

Stayed here for two nights. Booked through laterooms.com and got a double room for single occupancy for an average of £45 a night. Friendly staff, excellent breakfast with a wide choice. Hotel was very nice; quiet, clean and very comfortable. Room was excellent. Good bed, Panasonic flat screen TV, very clean and quiet. For the price I paid, I wouldn't fault it. Would definitely stay here again.
