We stayed at Hillthwaite House for 2 nights and were very disappointed with our stay. The rooms are nothing like any advertised photos we have seen, the room was in keeping with the rest of the hotel; dated and in need of modernisation. The bed was small and uncomfortable and the heating beggared belief. it was like a sauna and required the window open (at the beginning of February) to moderate the temperature. No faulting the staff, all seemed pleasant and friendly but the food was the biggest disappointment. Our 5 course evening meal featured cool Cumberland Sausage with cold mash, lukewarm carrot and corriander soup with not a hint of coriander and a dry rump steak with 7 chips (I kid you not). When additional chips were requested, a bowl of earthy tasting chips were rapidly produced with what appeared to be microwave heat. We were asked to choose our selections from the menu in advance of our meal, which lends to the suspicion that much of the food is pre-heated with the chef then hoping for the best. Not an experience that we will be repeating.

SOUTHLAKER, General Manager at Hillthwaite House Hotel, responded to this review, February 4, 2013
I am disappointed that on this occasion we have not met the high standards we set for our food, which has usually been well received as our recent reviews show. Thank you for your constructive feedback that we will certainly act upon. I am also sorry that the bedroom was also found to be wanting in some respects. As all our bedrooms are different and individually furnished, it is not practical to display them all on our website and literature, and it is inevitable that some bedrooms may not resemble the photos. We are always looking to improve our bedrooms through an ongoing refurbishment programme, but will certainly replace the bed in question. On a more positive note, I am glad you found our staff to be pleasant and welcoming. I hope that you will return to Hillthwaite at some point in the future, and take away a better impression than that which you recently received.

We have just returned from our second stay at Hillthwaite. Very relaxing, good food and lovely view. Staff very attentive and good attention to detail. Lovely food too! We will be back. Easy walk for the hotel to either Bowness- where you can get a boat or Windermere itself.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a classic rather than standard room - lovely view and good seating area.

We stayed at the Hillthwaite House Hotel last weekend, lovely public areas, friendly staff, food great, lovely and warm which was needed due to the amount of snow, only one small thing our room was very small, abit dusty and very tired looking in need of an update, would stay there again.

We had the room with a 'panoramic' view.... what a beautiful view!

Room was clean, warm and big enough for two. Bed was lovely and comfy and spacious! We opted for the five couse menu on our first evening.. fillet steak was beautiful as were all the other courses.

Staff very attentive, friendly and approachable. Breakfasts were good- cooked to order.

A lovely change to have bottled wine and water in the room... definitely appreciated! We were also given vouchers for a free glass of mulled wine each on arrival. We took these into the lounge and sat infront of the real log fire.. heavenly!

Only downsides? Bathroom was relatively small.. not sure it was worth the jacuzzi/airpool bath! The floor did get soaked with the airpool on... even if the bath was only just filled to over the jacuzzi jets as instructed. However, was still lovely even though it was a dominant room feature.

Water was lovely and hot (this always ruins my stay if the shower is tepid) and the addition of white company toiletries was lovely. The hotel is ideally situated for visitng Bowness and the lake. Lots of other 'eateries' around if you do not wish to dine in the hotel (the food is worth trying even if you only dine in one night it is lovely!).

We did not try the pool/steam/sauna as we didnt bring our swimming gear!

We visited the magic Wok chinese on our second night which was also good. If your a cycling freak - as my husband is.. dont forget there is Wheelbase at Staveley just up the road, as well as Evans cycles in Kendal!

Thankyou Hillthwaite for a lovely stay, no complaints we enjoyed it!

Room Tip: The view from the panoramic room was wonderful, especially on a clear day! fab views of the mountain...

A lovely hotel in a superb location, just a 10 minute stroll to Bowness. We stayed on a room, dinner and breakfast basis. We were warmly greeted on arrival, this set the tone for the rest of the stay as every member of staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We had a corner suite which was lovely and spacious with a very comfortable bed and a fantastic view out of one of the windows. The DVD player and the ability to borrow DVDs from reception was a great touch. The only thing that let the room down was the bathroom which was tired looking and needs a makeover. The food and service at dinner was fantastic and as for the breakfast.......so much choice from the cold buffet section and then there was a menu for cooked to order hot food, simply outstanding. The free glass of mulled wine on our second night while sitting in front of a fire in one of the two sitting rooms, which were both warm and comfortable, was a lovely touch. The bar prices were very reasonable for a hotel and spending the end of our second night chatting to a couple of guests and staff was very chilled and relaxing. On our final morning we decided to use the pool and steam room. We felt a bit guilty about asking the steam room to be turned on just for us, but it was met with the usual friendly response. We're glad we did, an hour in the pool and steam room was a great way to end our stay. Overall a brilliant stay, congratulations to all the staff for making it such a warm, welcoming hotel. We definitely hope we'll be back.

Upon arrival everything seemed fine the hotel looks great from the outside but we was in for a shock the manager was a miserable man the snow had just started to fall and he didn't seem welcoming at all bearing in mind we had just had a nightmare journey as result of the snow, even if he could smile and pretend that he enjoyed his job, we were shown to our room by a nice young man who was friendly

The room
The room was spacious and the view was great the bed was nice and comfy the bathroom was okay but on our second morning we found silverfish on the bathroom floor which was disgusting silverfish come when there is damp

The food
The food was included in our tariff which we are glad if we would have had to pay for it I would have been really disappointed don't bother with the steak it was the same size as a 10 pence coin the service at breakfast was rubbish the English lady was nice but the one who couldn't speak good English was rude and I've had better breakfast at my local cafe not good by my standards

Swimming pool
Well what can I say what a disgrace I booked this hotel as we enjoy relaxing in a nice pool we didn't even attempt to go in it it looks shabby and cold don't book this hotel on the basis of it having a pool because you won't go in it believe me

If your looking for a supped up bed and breakfast then this place is okay but as we have stayed in the lakeside around the other side of the lake now that is a hotel so much better class we will not be coming back to hillthwaite

SOUTHLAKER, Manager at Hillthwaite House Hotel, responded to this review, February 7, 2013
I am responding to this reviewer as the Manager on duty at the time of this reviewer's arrival.

First as to my own welcome which unfortunately the reviewer has completely misinterpreted as 'miserable' when what I was actually intending to display was a serious and genuine concern for the stressful plight which they and so many of our other guests were experiencing due to the volume of snow falling on Windermere at that time, but to suggest I dont enjoy my job because of this serious approach to the situation is an unwarranted misrepresentation of my attitude at the time, as we all, including myself, who were on the front line, felt desperately sorry that all their journey's were being disrupted in such a dramatic way. To have treated the situation in a dismissive, light hearted or couldn't care less manner would I am sure have solicitied an equally disparaging comment.

We are rightly proud of our room cleaning standards as so many of our guests tell us, and to read the reviewers comment regarding room hygiene saddens all of us. We were totally unaware that they had experienced such an unfortunate but isolated incident, which if we had known about would have prompted an immediate and urgent investigation as to the causes.

We consider that the value offered by our five-course meal to be very competitive and very much appreciated by the vast majority of our guests. Once again I would respectfully suggest that if the reviewers had mentioned that they were dissatisfied with the portion size of their main course then this would have been remedid immediately without any hesitation or reproach. I am sure that if a member of our staff came across as 'rude' this would be totally unintentional and I would think that something may have been 'lost in transalation' on this occasion. Our staff are consistently praised for their friendliness but if their has been any misunderstanding about the response from any member of our staff we sincerley apologise.

Whilst we accept that our swimming pool area cannot compete with the Olympic sized and often sophisticated leisure suites provided by some of the larger hotels and leisure clubs in the area, we would say in its defence that over the years it has met and continues to meet
the expectations of the many regular guests who appreciate an 'onsite free of charge' swimming pool facility rather than being provided with a voucher to gain admission to a leisure facility which may be a considerable distance from their accommodation, albeit not matching the luxurourious trappings of the latter. In addition, at the time of the reviewer's stay the pool heating boiler had been subject to a mechanical breakdown leaving the pool water unheated for a unscheduled period, The majority of guests understood that the recovery time to reheat the volume of water in the pool following the repair would not be inconsiderable, which we made very effort to minimise, but unfortunately this did prevent us from providing a fully heated pool for a time, and we obviously apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused to the reviewer and the other hotel guests who may have been affected.

In conclusion, we regret that this reviewer has found it necessary to resort to what we consider to be a rather personalised and misleading review of the Hillthwaite's ethos, service and facilities which have been painstakingly constructed over a number of years. We will redouble our efforts to satisfy the expectations of all our guests, but as usual we have no alternative but to accept the old adage that regretably you cannot satisfy 'all of the people all of time.'
