I booked 2 rooms for my family for 3 night stay directly with the hotel after looking at many hotel websites and I'm really happy to have chosen this one.
On a cold February day what could be more welcoming than to walk into a cosy country hotel reception with a crackling log fire. Our bedrooms (5 and 11) were huge and whilst some of the furniture was looking a little tired in places, the rooms were clean and bright and the overall effect was very good. The usual things were there; TV, hairdryer, tea/coffee tray, though sachets of hot chocolate would have been a nice touch for the children. During our first night, one of the rooms had a problem with the heating but this was dealt with very swiftly by the hotel staff who called an engineer to fix it immediately. All the staff that we met (reception, waiting and cleaning) were efficient and friendly throughout our stay.
We booked a dinner, bed and breakfast break. Breakfasts were fine; fruit, yoghurt, croissants, cereal, toast, juice, full english breakfast. Before our evening meal, we would have a drink or two in the Conservatory bar whilst nibbling on a plate of canapes which were different each day. Dinner consisted of 5 courses and everything was of a very high standard. A lot of thought went into the balance of flavours and the presentation. We all ate far too much. The last course was coffee and chocolates which we had in the library whilst we played silly games until bed.
Some lovely features included: the welcoming fires in all of the downstairs rooms which were made up before we came down to breakfast and were still going strong as we went to bed, fresh fruit and daily newspapers in reception.
Windemere/Bowness-on-Windermere itself is a short 5 minute drive away.
I don't like to revisit a hotel I've stayed in as I always think there are other places to try but I could break my own rule with this one.
