“Great value and a perfect stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

This was our 2nd visit to Storrs Gate House, we booked directly with them for three nights and got a discount which was cheaper than booking via other sites, and we even got a voucher when we left, with discount off our next stay. It's a lovely place to stay and is great value for money.
The breakfast is to die for, the owners are friendly, helpful and can’t do enough for you. We stayed in the king-size Jacobean four poster suite with sitting room – it's spacious and has really comfy armchairs, perfect to crash in after a long walk! The location is great, just on the outskirts of Bowness with a lovely walk along the lake side with gorgeous views. Even being on a junction, at night it was quiet and relaxing and we had a good night’s sleep.
Will go back again and can't recommend it enough!

My partner and I stayed here for one night on 26th April. Vince and Shirley made us feel very welcome, the room was spotlessly clean and very pretty. Breakfast was so lovely and filling!

Didnt stay long enough but will definetly come back for another visit.

Highly recommended.

Stayed two nights here in the Jacobean suite as we were attending a wedding nearby. We couldn't fault anything. Beautiful room with our own private sitting room, tasty breakfasts with local and homemade produce and everywhere was spotless. Good quality toiletries in the bathroom and lovely thick towels. Vince and Shirley were very welcoming and we slept like logs in our four-poster. Great location to walk into Bowness or down to the marina for a meal at the Boathouse without being in the thick of it. Would definitely recommend to anyone and it was far superior to a large hotel on the lake where our friends stayed. Five-star experience.

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We're delighted you had such a good night's sleep and were so happy with everything. Your description of a five star experience means that we live up to our grading and the fact that you felt we deserved top marks for everything really helps us to know we provide everything as expected. We were really pleased you brought your friends to have a look round, and that they were equally impressed - we hope to be able to welcome you all in the future.

Thanks again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

My partner and I stayed at The Storr Gate House for two nights in the Queen Anne Suite (Room 7). The location was very good, ignoring the junction, it's a 10 minute walk from the hustle and bustle which meant you could avoid tourist zones if you wanted to. Our room has lovely and big with a fantastic King sized four poster, it was very comfortable and didn't squeak at all! We had huge windows/patio doors leading out to the garden and lovely cosey thick curtains to block out the light in the mornings. The shower was.....impressive, you could easily fit two people in and it was very powerful which more than made up for the lack of bath.

Ideally no one would have been staying in the room above us, on the second night they woke up at the crack of dawn and were constantly (unnervingly) banging and stomping about for a few hours which unsettled us. As the room we stayed in was on the ground floor you are, inevitably, exposed to more noise from the kitchen which was next to our room and greeting areas than a first or second floor room...so if you are a light sleeper or like to sleep in we would recommend you ask for an upstairs room. We read that this room had won an award, which after staying in we can see why in some respects, however, the noise aspect was a shame.

Breakfast was in the round first class. The produce was generally local (or home made) and of the highest quality. I would recommend either serving fresh grape fruit or stating that it is from a tin as I was a bit disappointed when it arrived. It seems contradictory to have such good quality bacon, sausages, eggs etc then have tinned fruit. My partner and I had never stayed any were where you have to decide what you want to eat the night before, which you do here. Understandably it makes the life of the owners easier, however, it also makes you feel like you cant change your mind if you wake up feeling like something different- us Brits don't like to cause a scene!

There is, most definitely, a sense of having to fit in with what suits the owners here which was a surprise when paying quite a lot of money.

Vince and Shirley were excellent hosts but you have to take in to account that this is also their home which makes it a little different to some other guest houses. The personal and warm touch was unique and we would recommend this to other people.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us in such detail. We were pleased to learn you consider our home high in standards, and that the Queen Anne four poster room appeared to come up to expectations.

It was with surprise, and more than a twinge of disappointment to read that you had the feeling of having to fit in with what suited us, as this brings into question the genuine aspect of our hospitality - which, on reading many other reviews, has been enjoyed by most of our guests. Should this be as a direct result of our policy of requesting main course breakfast order during the course of the previous evening - may we please explain to other readers, that our menu of cooked items offers a good variety of choice – which, were we to have each and every item ready to cook each morning, would result in a vast amount of unnecessary waste. We understand not every guest might be happy choosing in advance, but should you wish to change your mind in the morning, we are both flexible and eager to ensure you are not dissatisfied.

The starter menu also is extensive, and includes a platter of fresh fruit - for example pineapple, water melon, banana, orange, grapefruit, grapes, strawberries or blueberries. We’re sorry you were not happy with the choice of grapefruit, but hopefully the two starters you both requested each morning (and were gladly served – as we do want you to enjoy) may have made up a little for your disappointment. We encourage guests to “mix and match” their starters and are more than willing to help with requests if we can. (One similar establishment with suites not too far from us only actually provides a continental breakfast - no choice at all.)

It was lovely to read you consider us excellent hosts, and that you will recommend us. Please don’t forget the Loyalty Discount Voucher, which if you can’t use yourselves, you can pass on to others.

We were sorry to note that you were disturbed by early risers, which sadly is beyond our control, but would mention with respect to the location of your room, the review “Highly Recommended”, 15 October 2012 with “Room Tip: Although our room was between the kitchen and the laundry it was peaceful and quiet at all times”.

My daughter and I spent four nights in the twin bedded room at this bed and breakfast in April 2013. The warm welcome and excellent hospitality shown by Vince and Shirley was perfect without being over the top. The accommodation is comfortable, beautifully decorated and very clean. The breakfasts were excellent, with more than enough food. The dining room had pleasant views overlooking the gardens and it was well situated for Bowness with a welcome 15 minute walk to help walk off the breakfast!

I wish they had half ratings for this was more than a four star experience for my husband and I. Vince and Shirley are as lovely as all the other reviews say. They have worked very hard to create a lovely ambience and the breakfast was first class. Location is ideal, close enough to walk to all the action but far enough out to feel like a retreat. We stayed in room 4, one of the smaller ones but still well appointed with partial view of the marina. The shower was nice and powerful and would be a bonus after hard walking.

Many thanks for taking time to write your review - we're really pleased that you found your breakfast first class, and consider our location ideal! Room 4, our king-size double, whilst not as large as our suites, still offers the same amenities as the suites, including power shower, and we're so glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for choosing us - we'd love to see you back again.
