“clean, functional, good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2011

Pretty average guest house in good location for exploring this area of the lakes. Paul (saw little of Marion) was a pleasant guy and made us feel welcome without being obtrusive. Room as a little dated and cramped in the bathroom and I did find the 'rules' book a little strange if not hilarious :) Breakfast was ok with good selection of cereals and yoghurts. Overall a pleasant B&B although for the money I believe you could do better.

Stayed 2 nights in a premier double room inc breaklfast and was more than worth the money.

Parking outside no problem
Room lovely, the bed, and pillows where so comfy didnt want to get out
toiletries and towels in en suite where top quality
breakfast was fantastic, cereals, yoghurts, juices, range of teas, followed by full breakfast also had the eggs benedict the day after and both were scrumptious in a very pleasant relaxed dining room
Paul and Marion unobtrusive and there if you needed anything
Brookside pub round corner was very friendly serving a good pint
Lovely walk into bowness probably taking 15 mins to the lake

Definately recommend

we stayed at Oldfield house for a few days to get away form the daily grind and get some time together for our 25th anniversary.Paul and Marion are very nice people(don't know what the bad reviews are about perhaps if you got a cold reception you should take a good look at yourselves for the answers?) the room was a king size the bed was very comfortable and the quality of the bed linen and towels was top notch.set in a quite street we both had some quality sleep.the hosts where very nice and helpful with local knowledge for things to do. the food was excellent every day and the choice is way above what you would get in most guest houses. The eggs Benedict and full English breakfast was cooked to perfection THANKS MARION,ALSO THANKS TO PAUL FOR THE CAMERA LESSON.try this guest house and don't pay any attention to the negative reviews you wont be disappointed. Paul does have a sense of humor however. when i asked the best way to walk into windermere he said put one foot in front of the other nice one Paul i asked for that one and fell straight into it, i also enjoy a bit of a laugh Good one.but if you cant chill and take a joke then stay at home and be miserable that's my advice.would we go back next time we visit the lakes YES YES YES.Our son and his girlfriend stayed here for there 21st birthday present from good old mum and dad in October and they both had a great holiday and both agree with us. in fact all they have said since we came home is isn't Paul and Marion lovely people. Not did you have a nice time mum and dad BUT THATS KIDS FOR YA , Thank Paul and Marion, from Gary and Sheila,

We had a wonderful week in Oldfield House. Paul and Marion were hospitable, efficient hosts and we felt comfortable and relaxed. We met other interesting guests and enjoyed the chat with them at breakfast.

We chose this accommodation because of its central location for a few days away to walk and enjoy the lake district. Our room was clean and confortable, the breakfast was excellent with a good choice and the owners could not have been more helpful to make our stay enjoyable. We would certainly go back and would recommend the guest house to others.

We booked our stay here through tourist information, it was a last minute booking as we had stayed one night in the Eastbourne Guest House (which is excellent and well recommended) and decided to stay another night in bowness/windermere. The Oldfield has a four star rating and for that and the money it cost (£90) we expected a beautiful b and b with excellent service. We were told we could not arrive till 4pm, which we asked whether this could be any earlier and the most we were offered is that we could drop our bags off. We wasn't very impressed that check in was so late, it was the latest check in I have ever known. When we arrived to drop our bags off, the owners were very flustered and seemed really unorganised, they weren't very polite and we were not looking forward to going back and checking in. When we did check in, we found the room to be okay, but nothing special. The public areas however, looked dirty and very outdated. The room was cold and when following the instructions in the hotel guide to use the thermostat to turn up the temperature unfortunately this made no difference, there was only full fat milk available on the hospitality tray. There was no iron and iron board in the room and when we asked if we could use the hotel one, we was told there wasn't one (how strange?). Also quite bizarre just to make you feel really welcome there was a list of things you can be fined for, which we didn't appreciate. At breakfast we had to endure a religious sermon on the radio followed by religious music, we did appreciate having someone elses religious views imposed on us. All in all, this place is nothing more than average, it didn't feel welcoming and the owners seemed aloof and uninterested.

We are sorry that this guest did not enjoy his one night stay and found us “aloof and uninterested”. These guests did arrive during the early morning when were cleaning rooms, tidying and washing up after breakfast which is always a particularly busy time. That is why we ask guests who are travelling by car to check in after 4pm when there is then an assurance that the house and the room are ready for their arrival. Many people understand and accept this arrangement. This is be adjusted for those travelling by public transport.
We would not be able to run a successful business if we were disorganised.

During the guests one night stay, the weather was quite warm and as the room faces South West gets the sun during the day and the heat is retained well into the evening. We were not asked by any guests over the night in question for the heating to be turned on.

There are only so many items that can be placed on the complimentary hospitality tray and therefore given the differing tastes of many different guests it is not always possible to put different types of milk out. If guests ask for semi skimmed milk we are able to oblige.

On our own guest feedback forms we ask what are your expectations of a Guest House. One of the prime concerns of guests is the cleanliness of their environment and we have always been told how clean our house is, not only by the Hotel Inspector but by other guests and a guest who was a professional cleaner.

Each year we spend many thousands of pounds refurbishing the house and ensuring the paintwork and soft furnishings are kept up to date using modern neutral colours in a Victorian built house. Decoration is sometimes down to taste. For example in another realm, one person may find tattoos tasteful others may not.

Over the past 9 years while we have owned Oldfield House we have only been asked on 2 or 3 occasions by people staying for one night for an ironing board and as such have not found it necessary to put them in the rooms or make one available.

The radio is tuned to Radio 4 and we are not responsible for the content of BBC programming, but perhaps by listening to what other people believe might help all understand each other a little better.
