“Nice and chilled”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2014

We visited here a few times in our stay. Staff are friendly, service is really slow at the bar, but if you're not in a hurry is fine. We had a curry on curry night, which was nice
Is dog friendly, casual and relaxed. Not gourmet, but we did enjoy it. Wouldn't recommend, but may go again.

“Can not be called a steakhouse, dreadful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014 via mobile

My husband and I went to grey walls 'steakhouse and restaurant' which is in fact a rather shabby pub. You seat yourself and find your own menu then order at the bar.

We ordered two medium rare rump steaks, reasonably priced and an extensive list of sides to pick from. There was one other couple in the pub who had ordered food, yet it took over half an hour for our steaks to arrive. When they did, they were very overcooked, well done to medium well in the middle.

We asked the girl on the bar to return the steaks as they were so overcooked, she apologised and took them back. A few minutes later she returned and asked us the clarify what the issue was. We again said they were well done and not medium rare. Another few minutes passed and she returned yet again, stating that the chef had looked at our steaks and said there was 'plenty of blood' so what was wrong with them. At this point we showed her the google images page of what a medium rare steak should be to 'prove' as such our point, something we definitely should NOT have to do in a restaurant! I said if it was a problem, we'd leave. She replied that she would tell the chef to cook the steaks rare and it would not be a problem.

Somewhat confused by the establishments attitude, we waited another 15 minutes for the chefs attempt at 'rare' steak. It arrived medium at best, but was at least better than the first attempt. My second steak was such poor quality it was difficult to eat, a thick rind of fat and riddled with fatty veins I had to cut out. I only ate it due to being so hungry as it was 3pm by this point!

The corn on the cob was also overcooked and my beetroot and red onion 'salad' was literally just some beetroot and red onion, no salad aspect to it. Fortunately the boiled potatoes were nice.

One of the worst meals I've ever had due to the attitude of the chef and server, combined with terribly cooked steak. How they can market themselves as a steakhouse I don't know.

“Great Food & Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

The Grey Walls Steakhouse and Restaurant was where my daughter and I had our evening meal in Windermere. The portions were very generous and well prepared. I had a medium well steak and found it cooked perfectly. The service was very good and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly.

“Don't bother !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

Thought we would try it after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor (4 adults one child). Looks good from the outside and freshly decorated but when we went inside only 2 other people sat at the bar. Had booked 2 days before on Friday but they didn't know anything about it.
Menu read well but when we ordered at the bar, NO lamb cutlets and NO steak and ale pie available, it was only 18.00
So 3 steaks, 1 lasagne and 1 child's pizza ordered.
3 steaks ordered med/rare, 3 steaks arrived, 1 med/rare, 1 med and 1 very well done, lasgne only ok.
My wife wanted salad with her steak, got veg. Pasta arrived instead of Pizza!
The child's pizza took a further 30 mins to arrive, far too much cheese and probably the frozen type, deff not fresh.
Apologies were offered for the mix up with the child's meal of a free sweet so thought they were trying.... But, after ordering 1 cream we were told there would be a wait!!! ( A table of 6 opposite us had ordered).
However after a further 35 minutes we left with a disappointed child.
The barman/waiter/receptionist was pleasant and did make an effort but was obviously struggling to cope.
The family of 6 opposite thought the evening was hilarious and commented it was just like a scene from faulty towers!
Won't be going back, there are some really nice places to eat round Windermere, this is NOT one of them!

“Lovely Service nice Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

Booked a table last Saturday night after accidentally coming across this when we stopped for a Beer in the Beer Garden Pub (which was fab!) So we booked a table in the Hotel Restaurant. The service in the Restaurant that night was excellent, the waiter was very freindly and helpful, the food was also very good, we both had the ribeye steak, which I struggled to finish. The Chefs thick cut chips were great too!! Only negative I could say about the Restaurant, is maybe make it a little more inviting...lower the lights a bit and maybe place candles on the tables as it felt more like a hospital dining room, so this was a shame as they had a pianist (on his keyboard) played some lovely music, and so the ambiance was too stark so spoilt it a bit, or we would have stayed and had another bottle of wine!!
