“A great place for a special occasion.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

We went for lunch to celebrate my husband's birthday, taking three adults and a four year old with us, so six in total. The five adults had the a la carte menu and they did a special meal for the little one. The wine waiter advised us on champagne and he was spot on, and we also had two bottles of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. The total bill came to £539, so judge for yourself whether you think that was expensive. We though it was well worth it, because we could not have bettered the experience; everything from the valet parking on arrival to the umbrellas held for us as we left was perfect. The food is exquisite and immaculately presented. The use of dry ice and quirky equipment kept the youngest member entertained (and the adults too) and she loved her spag blog - served in what she called "a witch's hat". The flavours are superb and the meals brilliantly balanced. We have eaten here before, but this was extra special and everyone loved it. The staff are discretely attentive. For example, little one commented that there was juice in the bottom of her bowl, and in the blink of an eye a spoon appeared for her. We will go again.... soon.

Room Tip: We didn't stay - we went for a fabulous family lunch. A great place for a special celebration.

It was a memorable stay at The Samling as I had just been proposed to earlier that morning down by the lake.

A reasonable welcome could of been a little happier but hey oh nothing was going to dampen our day. It was a crisp cold January morning a year to the day in fact, my fiancé had book the bothy a detached cottage. Simply magnificent! The view over the lake was breath taking as was the cottage. The in room touches like REN bath products, green & blacks chocs, voss water were all upper touches that made it feel luxurious.

We booked the hot tub for sun set and sun rise which was perfect it was typical frosty English weather thankfully not wet... But the hot tub got that hot we had to kept taking breaks thankfully we took water with us to drink. It was nice and private and I guarantee it's one of the best views, extremely serene.

Food was sensational, a lovely stay shame about the value and service and other negative posts. I think The Samling lacks in all year round consistency.

From the initial booking process to checking out, a first class experience. We stayed in Methera - a spacious and well appointed suite (cannot be called a room!), with wonderful views. Dining was superb with wonderful food served impeccably with style and a sense of theatre. Staff were friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Hope to return in the not too distant future.

We stayed at the samling for new year after giving it one more chance (hoping it had improved) as our previous stay was the worst ever.(we have stayed here a total of 6 times in 2 years)
We stayed in a very shabby suite, it was damp and drab with a very leaky bath/shower which flooded every time we had a shower. The food is (nice) but the manager is almost certainly in the wrong job, he is not welcoming or friendly and doesn't seem to have a genuine interest in the guests. The hotel needs to refurbish its rooms and clean the carpets in the lounge and invest in some type of decoration in the dining rooms as they are with out atmosphere or identity.
New year fireworks were no-existent and the decorations were, lets say minimal with the least effort made that i have ever seen! We phoned down twice for the same item which took 20 minutes to bring to the room, there was a shortage of essentials in the room. I gave up asking in the end
The icing on the cake was watching another guest struggle to change a tyre on his car in the epic rain fall for well over an hour with no assistance what so ever from staff! not so much as a brolly for him, he was absolutely drenched! This poor man was an older gent and had torn his tyre on the wall whilst parking in the small area provided, all this in full view of the reception area.
Disgusting seeing as this is meant to be a 5 star establishment priced as a 7 star!
We agreed to never go back, its not worth the money or the stress and will spend our hard earned money to a much better hotel which wont be named.... but is a stones throw away from the samling.

We spent two nights at the Samling between Christmas and New Year and it was perfect in every way. The food is incredible, the staff are great - very helpful, knowledgeable and courteous but in no way stuffy - we felt completely at home for the 3 days we spent there! The room was great, there was even a Christmas tree in the corner. We had one of the rooms without a lake view, but you didn't have to go far to see it so it was of no consequence to us.

The location of the hotel between Windermere and Ambleside is great for an easy walk to either, and the combination of the hotel and the lakes at this time (or any time) of year made for an unforgettable anniversary break. Anywhere else in this area would be a huge compromise!

I would love to have left a review for this hotel but sadly they cancelled our reservation just five days before we were due to stay. I booked (and paid) for the reservation early in August to celebrate our 4oth Wedding Anniversary in December. They offered us a room upgrade on a different date which really didn't help. They booked us into a different hotel but it really was a very disappointing experience all round.

This fabulous, boutique hotel occupies an elevated position with stunning views toward Lake Windermere. It has won a host of industry awards and critics regard it as world class. The Michelin starred food is prepared with enormous skill and care and the lunch menus are especially good value.
