“Treat yourself -you w'ont be sorry.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2010

I booked this small select hotel as a birthday [BIG BIRTHDAY] treat for my husband. Cannot fault it-We had a garden suite complete with outside deck and hot-tub.The suite itself was superb-huge bed-fab. bathroom and quality specs. good quality bedlinen and Molton Beown toiletries -soft thick towels robes etc-lots of thoughtful details throughout. And now to the House itself-every public area lounges dining areas and verandahs-just oozes style-but not pretentious. The food-we had breakfast and dinner in our deal-was superb! The proverbial icing on the cake however is the staff! They are a great team-and the family/owners seem to really care. So if you you want a bit of pampering-all these lovely people will take care of you-it is'nt cheap-but if you can you should!

From the Cunliffe`s , to the General manager to the front of house staff and all other restaurant and bar staff - all very attentive and friendly but discreet. We were blessed with great weather so able to use the outside areas after some great walks above Grasmere and Ambleside. Far , far from the maddening crowds. An eden. Wines and food alone worth the the drive for. And for that something special - the garden suites are worth the extra. We are already planning another trip back in the Autumn, winter.

This is the second time we have stopped at the Gilpin Lodge. The first time was on our honeymoon back in Sep 2008 and recently in May 2010. We stopped in the Seargent suite on both occasions and have to comment on how well presented & clean the room is. The views from the hot-tub were amazing espically the Llama's. The service & food provided by the Cunliffe family is truly wold class. I would give this hotel 10/10.

I was looking for a luxurious and relaxing hotel for my Birthday and found exactly that at Glipin Lodge. The hotel is stylish & beautifully appointed, we had a warm welcome and were swiftly shown to our beautiful Garden Suite. A lovley large room with its own deck and a hot tub. There was everything you might expect and a few additional toughtful touches. We loved the peacefulness of the location and the opportunity for some quality time together. The Cedar Hot tub was a wonderful extra, we sat and enjoyed the view of the neighbouring sheep wandering by. The dining experience was also good, the lounges for pre dinner drinks were very comfortable and had a lovely atmosphere, the chef produced a lovley meal with obviously locally sourced produce. WInes suggested matched well. All in all I would highly recommend a stay at Gilpin.

We have just had a lovely weekend at Gilpin Lodge. The room was very comfortable, with contemporary decor, and had everything you could possibly need. The public areas are comfortable, and nowhere ever felt crowded, although the hotel was full. The staff are friendly and helpful, check in was quick and simple, unlike some places we have visited. The dinners were very good indeed, as were the breakfasts.Altogether,we had a very enjoyable weekend indeed, and hope to return in the not to distant future.

We were given a very warm welcome here and it really is a beautiful hotel. The room was spacious with the most beautiful and spotless bathroom I have seen. Truly comfortable.
The hotel itself is beautiful. Each room is tastefully decorated and the overall ambience is opultent without being frumpy.
The food is good, especially breakfast. Generally the service is excellent, though we were rather neglected at dinner.
Not cheap, but sometimes one wants to splash out.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
