Another fabulous stay at Gilpin! Weather mixed, but managed one decent walk. Food was spectacular.........new chef is marvellous! Staff couldn't be more helpful if they tried.
Frankly the best hotel we have ever stayed at...........ever!!

We stayed at Gilpin 2 years ago, I have only just joined Trip Advisor but felt compelled to write a review 2 years on. I can honestly say having stayed in many luxurious hotels in the UK and abroad, that this is the only hotel I would return to (and hope to soon). We felt so welcome despite arriving very late during dinner and this fantastic service was experienced throughout our weekend. The hotel's restaurants are beautifully decorated and furnished. The large lounge with roaring fire and comfy sofas are the perfect spot for a pre dinner drink and menu perusal. Our room was extremely comfortable and well designed with a huge spotless bathroom. The food was refined and delicious and the completely unique welsh rarebit at breakfast was a treat. I hope when I return this is still on the menu. Overall I would thorougly recommend Gilpin Lodge.

Stayed with husband and friends the first 4 nights of our Lake District visit. Accomodations were comfortable and convenient and food was excellent. But the outstanding feature was the staff. Everyone was helpful without being stiff. Jess planned a rainy day itinerary for us and gave us maps for that and for walks (first evening we wanted a short walk and she gave us one right from hotel that was really nice). I asked about name of a tree near the door with unusual fruits on it and the reception staff did not know but the next evening they had printed out and gave me the web page desciribing this tree! We also received excellent advice on single malt scotch choice and super service at meals.

Warm and friendly welcome and surprise upgrade - thank you. The staff were all well trained and efficient and attentive in the right measure. We had booked dinner and the service standard remained very high. I did have an issue with my starter but my wife's
meal was good, not michelin standard, but pleasant nonetheless.
One quirky tip- if you like Heinz tomato ketchup, as I do, with your cooked breakfast [which was only average] - you will need to bring your own !

We were only there for 3 days but it was fantastic.

We had one of the suites Cat Bells - great room and facilities - huge bathroom!

Food was very good morning and evening.

The staff are some of the most helpful we have ever seen.

What a wonderful place to stay for us it was ideal as a complete chillout !

From the moment we arrived at the hotel the staff were very friendly and attentive. Our room wasn't quite ready so we were offered some home made lemonade in the lounge which was very refreshing. After only a short wait we were shown to our room, Cat Bells, one of the new garden suites, it was beautiful, very stylish and our garden area was very private. Dinner was an adventure not quite knowing what to expect but every course was delicious and there were a couple of special touches which really made our anniversary special. The gardens were delightful it's just a shame the weather wasn't better during our stay. It wasn't cheap but we had a lovely time and would certainly go again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
