“Very lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

My husband and I stayed recently at Gilpin Hotel, in one of the garden suites, Sergeant Man for our wedding anniversary. The welcome on arrival was lovely, so friendly! We were thrilled when we were shown to our room, it really was beautiful and they had thought of everything ... the room was so well equipped .... even candles by the bath. We loved this room as it was so private and the hot tub was just amazing!!! It was so relaxing that we didn't want to leave it to go for dinner. The only criticism of the room was that it was very hot, we couldn't find a thermostat, but this is a small thing which was easily sorted out by opening the door on to the lovely patio. The reason I haven't given this 5 stars was simply because we weren't overwhelmed by the dining experience .... although I love getting dressed up, we prefer a much more relaxed atmosphere (the waiting staff were a bit starchy) and the food was nice but not amazing! The decor of the room we sat in for dinner and breakfast wasn't as beautiful or subtle as the rest of the hotel ..... simply too much orange!! Neither was it intimate as the tables were very close and we could clearly hear the next tables conversations. Thankfully we got to return to our piece of paradise .... our lovely room and another dip in the hot tub under the stars! We did have a lovely stay but I think the cost, for us, would be prohibitive to return.

If you want to be spoilt rotten and thing you deserve a bit of luxury living for a few days this the hotel for you! Our 'classic' room was fabulous; great interior design, huge comfy bed and a view towards the Lama's paddock. Plus a big en suite bathroom.
The food was lovely but a bit too pretentious for our liking and the drinks are expensive, however,r we would definitely stay at the hotel again. The staff were all very helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

It was a wonderful experience and we aim to do again in the future. My husband enjoyed it immensely as it was his Birthday treat!

We celebrated our birthdays in style with 5 days at the fabulous Lake House.
From the moment of our arrival we were made to feel welcome and relaxed. All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. We particularly enjoyed our early evening swim when the candles were lit specially for us.
The Lake House is in a peaceful and beautiful setting, the rooms are immaculate , the breakfasts a treat and I can recommend it as the perfect spot for a relaxing few days.
Thanks to all the staff who made it such a wonderful holiday

A very enjoyable stay, the staff are very attentive without be intrusive. We stayed in the Kentmere suite, beautiful room with everything you required in a suite, lovely view over the gardens and water feature. We chose the a la carte menu. Very impressed we were too, we would certainly recommend Gilpin.
A very relaxed atmosphere, couldn't do enough for us.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

My husband and I have just returned from a night on the platinum package. Can't give it five stars for a few reasons but I would come back for a relaxing break.

Firstly, we are a young down to earth and easy going couple who have been lucky enough to stay and eat in some beautiful places in the UK and abroad so we had high expectations of Gilpin (maybe too high). Upon arrival at the main hotel there seemed to be a strange welcome (to be fair we were early as the website does state it welcomes guests of the Lake House to stroll the grounds before check in if so desired) we were shown around the lounges and bars and I chose to have a glass of wine whilst fawning over the baby Lama... the cutest little thing I have ever seen. Whilst enjoying the gardens we were informed that an important guest was at the Lakehouse so we could not arrive at the time we were originally told to in our confirmation email... not a big deal really (although being referred to as not an important guest did annoy me momentarily)

We were asked to arrive just 10 minutes before our trail was due to start so we took a short drive to the nearby village which is beautiful (although we had not planned to do this and really just wanted to arrive at the hotel and relax without being diverted elsewhere so that the other guest could extent their stay). We were asked to leave our car in the bottom car park and our therapist and a gentleman greeted us.

The Jetty Spa Trail.... What can I say about Kelly the therapist.. such a lovely down to earth and welcoming person. The type of person that makes you feel at ease straight away. Nothing was too much trouble for her even to having to help me do up the back of my swimsuit because it seemed to baffle my husband. Gilpin managers and owners take note - if I ran a luxury hotel this is the type of person I would want in my management team.

Hot tub, boat house and massage all lovely and if you get their early enough do what we did and watch the sun go down over the lake on the jetty before dinner with your champagne and fur blankets - what a way to unwind!

For our inconvenience at the start of the day the other guest offered us a token which was lovely however no apology came from any of the management or no gestures of goodwill (in fact we did not see any of them during our stay)

NB. Chauffeur a lovely man! Very friendly with a good sense of humour and helped me in my heels over the stones.

Evening meal - Lovely canapés and a nice atmosphere in the bar and the wine cellar looks lovely to browse through however the restaurant has no background music so it is very quiet and you can hear everyone's conversations and are very conscious that they can hear yours.

The 7 course tasting menu.... It was OK. That is about it really. I have eaten in better Rosette award restaurants (possibly even better non fine dining establishments) and I personally don't think the food showed a lot of skill (perhaps it was the head chefs night off?) The Tonka bean dessert was far too strong - a little goes a long way using the tonka bean. My husband liked the main although I found the Lamb very fatty and deep fried seaweed as a side doesn't really scream elegance. To put it in perspective this meal was £170 for 2 people and I really didn't see any quality ingredients to justify the price - where was the fresh seafood/ aged beef/ salt-marsh lamb/ truffles? All we were given was rice, mushrooms, bread, a small serving of lamb and a 3 course dessert. However, we were really full after it so at least the portions were a decent size.

The room was very hot to sleep in - I think they need to have a flat sheet on the bed rather than just a duvet so if you are too warm you can take the duvet off and still have a sheet over you and there was a lovely big bath but no bath oil or bubble bath? We had to use the shower gel in the bath. The room itself apart from these small issues was very comfortable and decorated in a luxurious style.

A very beautiful lakehouse tastefully decorated with stunning views and beautiful for walks - this and the staff are the reason we will probably return but the food really let it down. Next time we will choose from the a la carte menu if eating there again.

I think this hotel would benefit from marketing towards the younger generation who want to get out of the city and relax - we found that perhaps this is not the case. A relaxing getaway from our stressful jobs is exactly what we needed and I know that many of our colleagues/friends of our own age (under 30) would love Gilpin but I think the owners need to recognise that young professionals are a growing market looking for a country retreat. We felt a bit out of place at times in comparison to other places we have stayed.

Overall beautiful but it's the small things that matter (pay attention to detail).....

We stayed at Gilpin Lodge for three nights in February this year and it has well and truly set the bar for anywhere else we stay in The Lakes.
We arrived after a slightly epic walk in the driving rain and howling winds and within seconds felt relaxed. A wonderfully warm welcome greeted us and we were quickly shown up to our room. We stayed in Sergeant Man, one of the Garden Suites which is in a separate building just behind the main lodge. It is a beautifully presented room and there is nothing more that you could need from it, but if you do then the hotel staff will do there best to get it for you. However, the best feature actually lies outside the room in the form of your own hot tub - perfect for relaxing those aching legs after a day tackling the fells. Sergeant Man is the most private of all the Garden Suites - the only thing you are overlooked by whilst you wallow in your hot tub is the llamas in the adjacent paddock.
The restaurant in the hotel is pretty special too. We had a five course meal included in our room price so ate in the resturant every night. The food was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. The menu is not huge although they have recently introduced a second Market Menu which is slightly less "high" cuisine than the Table d'hote choices. Five courses were more than enough (actually probably a bit too much) and that combined with the large breakfast provided each day meant that we restricted ourselves to two meals a day. However, the breakfast was absolutely wonderful with a really good range of choices so don't skip that!
The only thing we would do differently is to probably eat out for one of the nights that we stayed there.
This isn't really a place for children so leave them at home if you can!
I understand that there are plans to expand in the next year with a second restaurant and more spa/beauty options available. I just hope it keeps the personal feeling that it has obviously worked hard to maintain.

We have just spent two nights on our mini moon staying in a garden suite at The Gilpin Hotel... Absolutely breathtaking room, very romantic, huge bed, hot tub, stunning decor. Fantastic team (Barney, Zoe, Jenna, Fran, Laslo, Juan, Angela) looked after us during our stay, we felt special and extremely well looked after. Food was AMAZING, tasting menu on each night, we have not stayed anywhere better. Can't wait to go back! Thanks again, Mr & Mrs Vilchez

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
