“Two night winter break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

Hotel was well kept with beautiful grounds, friendly and efficient staff although evening meal was good it wasn't fantastic. The room was classed as a suite but it was just the size of a double with a large step between the bed area and the sitting area/bathroom, not easy to navigate if you need to get up through the night. Nice experience but not worth the substantial cost.

A fantastic place to stay, this was our fourth visit and one of the main reasons we decided to go back was that we knew we would feel relaxed within about an hour - we weren't disappointed. As always our room was gorgeous, the food wonderful and the service excellent! We will definitely be back

We stayed at the Lake House for four nights. It was a special occasion, so we wanted to splash out. Overall, it was absolutely stunning, completely luxurious and a perfect stay. It is hard to describe what the Lake House is, because it is not a hotel and it does not feel like a hotel, but nor is it a B&B, I found it to be completely unique. Our room was lovely, very big and comfortable, the bath was just enormous. Coming from central London, it was great to have complete silence at night. The location is isolated, but only a very short drive to towns and sights. The decor of the living areas that are used by all guests is simply stunning & should be in some of the home decor magazines! Someone has put in a lot of effort in styling the Lake House and it is worth it. We tried to use all of the facilities, the indoor pool was great, we used the outdoor spa, looking over on the lake and drank champagne, how decadent! We did the walk around the private lake, that was so peaceful. We had booked the deal that included breakfast and dinner, but we were not sure if we would actually do that every night. After the first night, we were hooked! Breakfast was plentiful and the dinner was lovely. It was wonderful to be collected by the charming Andrew and driven to the hotel for dinner. Before we arrived, I thought that we would just walk up to the hotel, however little did I realise about the tiny country road where the Lake House is located! The staff were all brilliant, the highlights for us were Lorenzo at the Lake House, who was so easy going and provided the perfect level of service and Andrew who drove us to dinner and back each night. All other staff though were great, the service was relaxed and so genuinely friendly. It was not a cheap stay, but given that we had two meals it was not as expensive as it could have been. It is a very relaxed but luxurious atmosphere. Cannot wait to go back.

We visited the Gilpin last week for afternoon tea. We have been there a couple of times before and found it to be similar, if not slightly better than all the others in the Lakes. HOWEVER, this time, they seem to have upped their game. All of the food was amazing - every sandwich was beautiful, as were each of the fabulous cakes and pastries. We didn't even manage to get as far as eating the scones because we were so full. The best 2 hours we have spent in a long time - and excellent value for money.

We visited Gilpin in August for a girls night away staying in a spacious suite, decorated beautifully the luxurious bathroom was a key feature, the modern shower, bath and gorgeous Molton brown products. The suite came with a very private hot tub and terrace where we spent the afternoon with a bottle of prosecco. The terrace although located near other suites was very quiet and tranquil.

The evening meal was served with delicious canapes and cocktails, before been treated to the meal. The food at the Gilpin was the highlight of my trip, the pre starter fish and chips and the pre deserts set it apart from other hotels. The staff were friendly attentive and the restaurant itself had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, we sat in the conservatory which at night looked beautiful candle lit.

The Gilpin hotel itself is set a 10 minute drive away from Windermere, we found that we preferred the seclusion and tranquility of the hotel set on its own lake to busy Windermere! We will definitely be returning for the delicious food!

We stayed at the Gilpin Hotel for the second time in July. On this occasion we were disappointed by the food on the second evening, on our previous stay we had thought the food was perfect. Apparently the chef was trying out a new menu. The weather was hot while we were in the Lake District which was lovely during the day and when sitting outside for an aperitif, but the room was very hot and made it difficult to sleep. When we arrived the windows were shut so the room was stifling. Breakfast was excellent both mornings. As my husband had booked our stay to celebrate my 50th birthday (the hotel had actually asked if there was a special occasion), I had expected perhaps being wished happy birthday, which is the kind of thing which sets hotels like this apart from large hotels, but nothing.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
