“The perfect start to our honeymoon!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2012 via mobile

Firstly, I'd like to say a massive thank you to all the staff and management at Gilpin Lodge to kicking off married life with a perfect start - we stayed at Gilpin the Monday after we married, and we could not have wished to a more perfect place to celebrate. We were kindly upgraded to a garden suite, which is absolutely stunning to say the least. Perfect furnishings, spacious and airy room with great lighting......oh, and the hot tub!!

The dinner in the evening was faultless - the whole experience was beautiful, the service was simply excellent, and not stuffy. Mike, our waiter was really good, just a young lad but he has the key skills to be a top class waiter, and he is!

The friendliness of the staff here is just perfect, they are not too intrusive and they allow you to enjoy each others company, but look after you so so well. We really didn't want to leave.

We are planning to return (again) for our anniversary - this is now our second visit, and we have vowed it won't be our last!!

I've seen the reviews on the restaurant on here, and I am shocked that there are some people (who are full of their own self importance) who don't seem to rate Gilpin. Ladies and Gentlemen, leave your L'enclume and Sharrow Bay stuffiness at the door, as this place is far from being stuffy and pretentious. It's perfect, there are no other words for it.

What an amazing experience. I spent a few nights at the Lakehouse and would most definitely recommend this to others. Food was lovely, wine was superb and staff were attentive. Can't wait to go again!!

We stayed at Gilpin a few years ago for my husbands 40th birthday and decided to visit again recently. We stayed in the same room (St Sunday Crag) and enjoyed it even more this time round. The hotel is so lovely and relaxing, the room was spacious, immaculately clean and the hot tub... well that was the icing on the cake. Dinner was fantastic and we chose to have the suggested wines, which led to a couple of fascinating chats with Ziggy (the Sommelier). We absolutely will be back and are already planning to stay more than one night.
If you want quiet, understated luxury, incredible service (that is not fussy or pretentious) and great food in marvellous surroundings then you should visit Gilpin.

Room Tip: Garden suites have hot tubs and are set away from the main buliding for extra peace and quiet and pr...

My family and I have been going to the Lakes for years and we always promised that one day we would treat ourselves to a break at Gilpin Lodge after having a look around about 15 years ago. Mum and I finally got around to it and I can say it was defiantly worth the wait. WOW!

When we arrived we were greeted at the door by a very friendly lady who told us we had been upgraded to a Garden Suite (Patterdale). The room was amazing; they had also made sure that even though we’d been upgraded it was still a twin room. The room was beautifully decorated and had a lovely living area with a step down from the area where the bed was giving the feel of it being 2 different rooms. The bathroom was huge with Molton Brown products. In the living area there were double doors out onto a patio, where in nicer weather it would have been lovely to sit out there in the peace and quiet with a glass of wine.

The food was amazing, so much care and attention was put into every course whether it was dinner, breakfast or a meal in the bar. All the staff were so friendly and attentive and this just added to the fantastic atmosphere that makes Gilpin Lodge amazing.

On our last day we were told there was no hurry to leave the room and they arranged a tour of the Lake House for us. The Lake House is the absolute cherry on the cake, STUNNING is putting it mildly. I can’t put it into words; you have to see it to believe it. I defiantly recommend Gilpin Lodge and Lake House.

Room Tip: Go onto their website before you visit as they have been very clever and put pictures of EVERY room...

Our stay in Gilpin Lodge was a wedding gift, and a very lovely gift too... We stayed in the main house and had a truly wonderful time. Everyone was incredibly friendly making the effort to chat and help us. All our meals (tea, dinner and breakfast) were delicious and service was faultless. The hotel is also beautifully decorated and the communal areas are a delight to spend time in. It is a 4* hotel and thus there are some small luxuries that a 5* hotel would have had, the shared spa located in another local hotel was crowded and small, but anything it lacks in amenities it more than makes up for with the excellent customer services and the comfortable decor. We very much look forward to staying again!

Sally

My husband and I have just stayed at Gilpin Lodge in one of the Garden rooms and "wow" what an experience. The staff are so welcoming on arrival and nothing is too much trouble for them throughout your whole stay. Our room was beautifully decorated, very modern and classy with a private hot tub outside the bedroom for the extra wow factor. There is a large choice of drinks in the mini- bar and an extensive range of Molten Brown toiletries in the bathroom.
The dinner is amazing with a good range on the menu and beautifully presented food with an excellent choice of wine to go with every course.
It is the most amazing hotel we have ever been too and cant wait to go again to get completley spoilt.

Room Tip: Go for the Garden rooms so you have a private hot-tub.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
