“Third visit and still lucky”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

This is our third visit to Gilpin and as ever it exceeded our expectations.Excellent Staff, food delicious. This time we had a garden suite with hot tub which was heavenly(especially after a very wet cold GoApe experience) Only problem we now have is saving up for our next visit.

I had high expectations of this hotel having read other reviews and for the price paid. It completely lived up to them! My wife and I decided to go for a garden suite on the dinner bed and breakfast rate, which is expensive - but worth it. The room was spotlessly clean well presented and superbly appointed with everything you would expect at this price - the cedarwood hottub was a great way to unwind! The staff at the hotel were very friendly, helpful and provided excellent and unintrusive service which made our stay a delight. Really I can only describe the hotel and our stay as perfect.

Room Tip: The garden suites, while expensive, offer the best choice in the hotel, they are very private, quiet...

The family can't be held responsible for the terrible weather. The hotel is out of town so if you don't have a car you'll need to take a taxi to get into Bowness. Conversely, you're just over the road from the golf course.

This is a family hotel and the staff do a great job of making you feel welcome.

Value for money is good.

We have never gone wrong with a Relais&Châteaux property, although they are very pricey! This one was no exception and can only be described as “perfect”. The room was not yet ready when we arrived a bit early, so we were offered a complimentary drink which we enjoyed in the (rare) sunshine outside. The sandwich we decided to have with it never showed up on the bill either. The room was fantastic, spacious, open, and elegantly decorated without being overwhelming. The bathroom was huge and the deck out front had a nice wooden hot-tub. We wanted to go for a short hike and were given absolutely fool-proof instructions. We enjoyed the hot-tub before dinner and a very good meal. The staff went overboard to address any wish during the whole stay. Breakfast is served a la carte, no buffet, and when we asked for some fruit, which was not on the menu, we were served not only a bowl of very nice fresh fruit, but also a forest-berries smoothie. Nothing to complain about (the credit card charge only comes at the end of the month...)

Stayed here with my husband for 1 evening. Stayed in a Garden Suite with hot tub. Cost for our stay £600, so looks like we spent £140. on drink, as room cost including dinner is £460. This is an impeccable hotel, standards are high, the family that own it and all their staff, are very attentive and professional. Ambience very quiet and very relaxing. Reminded me of a much smaller version of Calcot Manor in the Cotswolds, yet without the children. Great, when you have done that, been there and worn the t-shirt. Had afternoon tea & champagne on arrival, was really nice - house champagne great. Evening meal was superb, and we opted to have the wines with each course that accompanied our choice of food, this was a fabulous idea, as it gave us chance to taste goods wines, selected for us, that we wouldn't have ordinarily chosen, so would definitely recommend that you try this. The interiors of the main house/hotel are simply gorgeous, a real country warm feel. The Garden Suites however are just okay, but definitely not of the same high standard and co-ordination of that, of the house/hotel. I expected the country theme to be continued in these buildings but it hadn't :( . Such a shame the owners did not carry this Country theme on, as I suspect everyone staying at a Country Hotel, wants it to be just that. The style is more modern, but not contemporary and has vertical blinds up on a section of the windows 'yuk' as these are best kept in an office environment. Badly got the designs & decor of these suites wrong! The bathroom was good and large in size, hot tub outdoors was a nice touch, slept well so bed really comfy. Gardens and location excellent. Breakfast was good, although our waiter could not understand my husbands request for tomato sauce, and brought him a small bowl of tomato soup! Would most probably stay here again but not in the Garden Suites, as when I stay in a Country Hotel, I like it to portray simply that. Overall, a great and relaxing place to stay, and your Country Hotel probably the best in the area.

We stayed for our first wedding anniversary in the 'Catbells' garden suite. The garden suites were in a beautiful setting and catbells was very peaceful and relaxing. The room, (especially the bathroom - fantastic!) staff service, hot tub, and food were absolutely fantastic, and the hotel is lovely. It did have mixture of guest ages but in general a slightly older clientele - it did feel a little formal (the older male bar tender particularly so, unfortunately), but this is also understandable in some ways - if you're going to stay here you do expect 'standards', and overall this didn't spoil our stay.

Our only slight criticisms were the wall next to catbells suite need to be slightly higher for more privacy when walking out into the garden/hot tub area and the ambiance in the dining areas needs attention - the dining areas are 'cosy' so you're sat very closely to other tables and it's so quiet that you feel uncomfortable talking at times - perhaps some light classical music would help?

Overall, it's a 'little gem of luxury in the lakes', we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definately book again!

We stayed for a two night stay for my husbands birthday. The cost was a lot more than we would usually pay for a weekend away but we weren't disappointed as the food, room and service were all outstanding and I felt worth every penny. The only gripe I would have is that the promotional material specifically states that they don't 'do weddings'. In actual fact they do. As we pulled up to the hotel in expectation of our 'intimate welcome which will feel like a home from home' (also on the promotional DVD) we got caught up in a wedding party who were arriving for a reception. This meant that our welcome was rather chaotic and we were ignored by the lady on reception whilst she fastened a button hole onto one of the wedding guests.
However all was forgiven as the service from then on was impeccable. Would definitely recommend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
A friendly, unpretentious, luxury hotel set in the beautiful Lake District National Park, Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has been family owned and run since 1987. Members of Relais & Chateaux, the Cunliffe family were the proud winners AA 'England Hotel of the Year 2012', English Tourist Board Awards for Excellence 'Small Hotel of the Year 2012', the Catey 'Independent Hotel of the Year 2013', and Condé Nast Johansens 'Most Excellent Country House Hotel of the Year 2013’. When you stay at Gilpin, you’re not just choosing a bedroom, you’re choosing an interior design with fabulous fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings. We have evolved Gilpin Hotel over the last 25 years, spreading out instead of up, so that fourteen of the twenty bedrooms lead directly onto the gardens, many with private decking and cedarwood hot tubs, and all with lovely views. Gilpin Lake House is, put simply, a sanctuary, where just six suites enjoy exclusive access to 100 acres of private grounds, including a stunningly beautiful four-acre private lake, swimming pool and the new Jetty Spa. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the hotel’s stylish bar and wine cellars before dining in one of four intimate dining rooms (complimentary chauffeur provided for Lake House guests). Head Chef Dan Grigg ensures exquisite cuisine in the 3 AA rosette restaurant; the 5-course menu has plenty of choice and is a celebration of some of the finest Lake District produce and West Coast seafood. For Lake House guests, the Swedish style spa treatment room has been built to blend with the environment, raised 3 metres into the tree canopy, with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lake. The Jetty Spa Trail is a bespoke Spa Journey designed to gently stimulate and revive the senses. Begin with a consultation to create personalised spa products just for you. Then to the spa for a private swim followed a relaxing salt snug and a reviving salt scrub shower. Through the woods to an aroma massage (and that view), followed by green tea and appetisers on the jetty. To top it off? Champagne in the hot tub, and bespoke spa goodies to take home. The ultimate goal – a deep relaxation that will stay with you for a long time. Quiet, untouched, and devoid of traffic or people the setting instils a sense of peace and calm. There are no weddings, conferences or children under seven to disturb the peace at Gilpin, just warm smiles, fresh flowers, and friendly, unpretentious service. ... more   less
