“Beautiful setting - it wasn't raining!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

Beautififul location excellent accomodation and food which lived up to it's 'Star' billing. The service was good just as one would expect from an establishment of this kind. I was very surprised that the restaurant did not make an attempt of describing the providence of the ingredients in it's menu. Situated in an area renown for its lamb, cheeses and other local produce I found it unusual in todays world. The other thing that also surprised me was the use of 'standard' products rather than locally sourced ones, eg Tiptree jams rather than an local artisan product. I couldn't fault the quality but the lack of imagination in sourcing in such a high end establishment with a catalogue of (justified in my opinion) awards was unusual in my experience.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have great views over the lake and the fells.

Thank you for taking the time to log on and write your review. We do try to buy things as locally as possible but we are also out to ensure that we buy the best ingredients on the day. You make a good point about highlighting provenance of the ingredients and it is something that we should consider. We do put a lot of effort into sourcing our ingredients and I agree, this is something that we should highlight. Thank you for pointing this out.

We do look forward to welcoming you back soon.

With all good wishes

Beautiful setting with amazing views of the lake and mountains. The Langdales looked spectacular. The afternoon tea was served by very professional and charming staff. We spoke to 5 members of staff during our afternoon, all of whom were friendly, chatty and very efficient. As for the food...perfect combination of sandwiches and yummy cakes. There was ample to eat and neither of us could have eaten another thing! The lemon tart was to die for. It was the tangiest most melt in the mouth pastry I remember tasting! The other cakes were just as nice; fruit cake, shortbread, scones with jam and clotted cream, chocolate eclairs, carrot cake and tiffin. There were 3 different sandwiches. ( we were asked about dietary requirements on booking and also before the meal was served) The champagne was delicious as were the lattes afterwards. Lovely, traditional rooms with super terrace when the sun is shining. We will certainly return,

Wow, what a hotel, couldn't fault anything - food, service, staff, and room all exceptional. Views are stunning across Windermere too.

We stayed in room 21 (Dovecote suite) which has its own TV room and is on the top floor so nice and quiet. Huge bathroom too.

It certainly deserves its place in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World magazine!

I decided to choose Holbeck Ghyll for afternoon tea to share with my sisters as I imagined it would be a cut above the rest, sadly we were disappointed.
Firstly the trek up to the hotel from the car park is on shale paths which are pretty steep, clad in heels I would have been better off in walking boots and we got wet venturing to the hotel and back, so if you're dressed up ladies bear note! If we'd had luggage it would of been even more of a struggle as outside of reception is pretty limited for parking.
The hotel it self is set in beautiful surrounding and has a lovely view of Windermere, not the best but still beautiful and the house is definitely a 'country house hotel', lots of heavy fabrics, Duresta sofa's and gilt frames.
The staff were very welcoming and happily moved us into the bay window with a view without huffing and puffing.
Sadly the afternoon tea for £18.00 was of an unexceptional standard, the menu had lots of choices of sandwiches which seemed very nice, however the sarnies that came with the afternoon tea were made on cheap plastic bread (all 3 fingers of them) and the fillings were poor, cucumber (with the skin left on), ham and piccallili, and smoked salmon and cream cheese, we weren't asked if we liked these fillings before they were produced and not asked if we'd like altrernatives.
The cakes turned up that were of a better standard, but a few of them seemed shop bought and not home made as we'd of imagined.
Finally we visited the loo before we left and although its decor is pretty, the smell of urine soaked into the carpet around the loo made you beat a hasty re-treat.
There are many hotels in the Lakes that offer all these things views, afternoon tea etc, up your game Holbeck and these small things can be ironed out.

Thank you for your review and we are all very sorry that your felt the afternoon tea let us down. The Head Chef and I are looking at ideas on how we can improve our afternoon tea offering so we do hope, that on your next visit, you will be surprised and uplifted rather than disappointed.

The loo does have a marble floor (not carpet) so I have asked the housekeeping team to give it a jolly good scrub to make sure that any wayward splashes don't cause any offending smells. Thank you for pointing this out to us.

We listen closely to all feedback and yours will help us to move upward and onward.

With all good wishes

Great location and excellent accommodation. Our room was technically a fell side view but we could also see the lake. It was virtually a suite with a sitting area and vast bathroom. Great welcome at reception from David who coincidentally had several other holiday locations in common with us. We plan to be back for longer

The standard of food has declined. This was our 8th visit. The prime reason for staying here being the Michelin star that was awarded a long time ago. It is now past it's "sell by date"
Hotel is now in need of a refurbishment. Would be reluctant to stay here again.
Mention made to the GM who was not interested almost to the point of arrogance.

Thank you for taking the time to logon and complete a review about us. I am delighted that you have given us three dots; have listened to your continued comments throughout your stay I was expecting you to only grade us one. I am genuinely sorry that you did not enjoy you stay and sad that all our efforts to satisfy you came to nothing. I apologies if my irritation with you showed; that was completely unprofessional on my part. I was glad that your spa treatments were a highlight of your stay; my wife was very pleased with your comments.

To our tripadvisor readers:

The Woolgar-Bowles’ departed London at 5am in the morning, arriving with us early. Despite check in time being 2pm we showed them to their room so they would be able to have a sleep. The first complaint from my team was the gentleman’s attitude and approach in asking the maids to cease all activity in the room above because it was keeping them awake; my team duly did this, delaying the check in time of the other guest quite considerably.

Both lady and gentleman were fish eating vegetarian and complained bitterly about the lack of choice of main courses; expecting that at least two to three of the items would have been fish. The daily changing menu carries 5 main course dishes, one of which is always a fish dish. Having over half the main course dishes as fish would have caused complaints from those people who have not chosen a self imposed dietary restriction. They also had access to an extensive vegetarian menu. Following on from their feedback, on their second evening, in discussion with them, my kitchen team cooked them a special menu including a sea bass dish as this was a preferred fish. Sadly this too failed to meet the mark and was denigrated as were the next two nights meals.

Throughout their four night stay, sadly, they also found the need to complain, among other things, about their wine choices, lack of internet access in their bedroom, a tired bedroom that needs updating, every single restaurant dish except some desserts, the bedroom layout, the porridge being too watery or too thick and the breakfast eggs not being cooked correctly. It was when other guests were openly telling my team that they had enjoyed their dinner very much; unlike the couple in the middle of the restaurant or asking not to be sat close to that couple as their continual criticism was affecting their enjoyment of a perfectly enjoyable stay, I decided that my team and I should concentrate on making all our other guests stay as enjoyable as we could as our efforts were truly falling on barren ground. It can be very dispiriting for the young waiters and chefs to receive continual vocal criticism when trying so hard to please.

As I said, I am genuinely sorry that they did not enjoy their stay but do feel that we did everything we possibly could. As Mr said to me, 'Perhaps we have just grown out of Holbeck Ghyll'; perhaps they have although we would always hope to welcome them back.

We stayed with our two children for four nights in a two bedroom cottage (Shieling). The service was top notch and the food was really excellent. The sommelier (Stefan) knows his stuff and recommended a great chateau cheval blanc 1995 when we wanted to splash out.

The children had a great time playing croquet and running around the grounds. The nanny service (Jo) was fantastic and our kids loved her. The weather was fantastic which helped to make the stunning views over lake Windermere even more memorable.

We would love to return.
