I had a very enjoyable stay for 2 nights in mid October 2007 and would rate it 4 1/2 out of 5 if I could.

The best thing about the hotel was the excellent service - the staff seemed genuinely pleased to have a toddler to attend to (I got the impression that children are not frequent guests) and no request was too much trouble. Also, the accommodation was lovely being stylish, relaxed and very clean.

A few minor gripes prevent this being a 5 star experience: The dinners are well presented but not as good as from comparable 3 AA rosette restaurants. Also the pillows were too small and no hair conditioner was provided.

Lovely food and setting but the smallest deluxe room I have encountered, did mention this to the management but no valid response. Other rooms did look bigger but no explanation of this.

We had a romantic weekend here to celebrate our pearl wedding so splashed out on a deluxe room overlooking Windermere. Although it was well appointed with a 6 foot bed, it was rather small and dark and it wasn't easy to spot the lake through the trees; it didn't feel like value for money. Don't go here if you are counting the pennies.

My other gripe was the cloying greeting by staff. On arrival the lady at reception enthused, "Welcome to Linthwaite!" and this was repeated by two other members of staff on the way to our room, indicating that the first welcome was not a spontaneous expression of delight at our arrival but a script in the style of the American "Have a nice day!".

On the up side, if you stop caring how much you are spending, the food is very good - main courses a little pretentious, but desserts to die for. The grounds are beautiful with a private tarn, but we didn't spend time in the grounds because we had the whole of the Lake District to walk in and that didn't cost us anything.

We stayed at Linthwaite House for one night on our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, and were pleasantly surprised when we were upgraded to a superior room by the wonderfully frendly staff. The hotel is set in lovely gardens and has superb views of Lake Windermere. The only downside for us was the very expensive and pretentious meal we had in the restaurant. The portions were tiny and not particularly tasty. We left the restaurant feeling very dissapointed with what should have been a very memorable meal, and felt cheated by the hefty £124 bill. We will not be making a return trip.

We have just been back for another visit to this truly unique hotel. We have been a number of times in different seasons over the past ten years and it never fails to delight. You are made to feel completely welcome and nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. Their attention to the smallest detail is what keeps us going back. The food is wonderful and the views sublime!
This morning the weather report said it would be chilly - sure enough - we went downstairs to find a gorgeous real fire in the lobby/hallway - they really do think of everything and you have to tear yourselves away!! Mike Bevans and his staff should be very proud.
The Lake District is a lovely place to visit but you could get out of the car and stay in this hotel and its grounds for days before you would want to even find the car keys again!
