Stayed with my partner for the weekend for my birthday to do some walking and sightseeing. We were greated by Roy and Dennis (2 chiwauwas) who let you know who's boss when you arrive and Paul the owner. The dogs gave us great amusement and had just as much character as the house itself!

To start with if your looking for a modern premises with all mod cons this is not for you as it is slightly dated. On the other hand if you're looking for a house full of character, history and original features set in the most idylic location then this is the place for you. it's a couple of minutes drive from Ambleside, if that. We stayed in the 4 poster room which had the most amazing views. The bed was so comfy it was hard to seperate myself from it in the morning! The room had a large tv and en suite bathroom. The bathroom has no shower (we knew this before arrival) which didn't bother us in the slightest but if you wanted, there is use of one down the hall. The water was always piping hot so guaranteed a lovely soak after a long day. Two heaters in the rooms so if you are chilly you can adjust accordingly. Towels changed daily and rooms cleaned with complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and a couple of rocky bars left daily. Now then breakfast...absolutely gorgeous and a wide range of choice. My only complaint about breakfast..... I put on 3lbs!!! The house is also lovely and clean.

Paul helped my partner arrange flowers and cake for my birthday too which was very kind of him. Paul is a very friendly host and made us feel really welcome in his home without being overwhelming. He gave us advice on the local and was a pleasure to talk to.

We would definitely stay at The Foxghyll again and will recommend it to others who are visiting the area. We would like to thank Paul for making our stay an enjoyable one.

My wife and I stayed yet again at this lovely peaceful country house for five days last month.
We've been staying since 2000 and have rarely stayed any where else when visiting the area.
Paul was his usual charming and accommodating self, particularly as our first two nights stay there were when it was fully booked. So we were offered the family guest room instead.
Yes you may see some towels outside a room that is being readied for incoming guests, so what, It's not the Ritz. It's an old country house where you have private parking and peaceful nights, perfect.

Foxghyll a hidden delight set away from the main 'hustle and bustle' of Ambleside but close enough to walk into the center at leisure. Paul really is a wonderful host. Not intrusive or imposing. Warmed the room prior to our arrival, ensured that we had a torch for the walk back after dark and provided a delicious breakfast that set us up for the day. Marjorie was a delight too. Really chatty and gave good tips on where to and where not to walk. The house itself is a lovely listed building that has retained so many beautiful features, the stained glass window being particularly impressive. We had a picturesque view from our room which was warm and very comfortable. The spa bathroom was a little cold but this is to be expected in such a property and did not detract from the many positives about this accommodation. The bed was unbelievably comfy. It was like sleeping in marshmallow. The best bed and breakfast bed EVER!! Definitely staying here again.

Room Tip: Spa room fantastic view and leads straight to the garden

Myself & my wife have stayed many times in the Lake District, but were so pleased to find Foxghyll.

The house is absolutely fascinating. A lovely big manor house set in its own private grounds. The garden looked fantastic and is worth the stay alone. Inside there ate many antiques and interesting features to the original and unaltered architecture.

The guest rooms are fantastic. The largest we've ever stayed in, and we just couldn't believe the views from our window. Overlooking the mountains first thing on morning made our stay.

Paul was a wonderful host. Breakfast was delicious and cooked to order and filled us up all day.

Looking forward to our next stay.......

This is a great little spot within walking distance of Ambleside and to the start of some great fell walks.

This is a guest house with 3 rooms and not a hotel with a bar, grill and 24 hour porterage, so anybody looking for such a thing should go elsewhere.

Marjorie the owner/operator has been doing this job for 30 years and I am sure she has seen it all. I am sure some people may find her a little abrupt but I for one find her straight talking attitude quite refreshing. Again if you want to be swooned and fussed over this is not the place for you.

When we arrived - yes, the house and room were cold. Marjorie pointed out the two heaters in our room which we switched on and 30 minutes later the room was warm and cosy - SIMPLE! I would not expect this family to heat this huge property and all rooms 24 hours a day... for £250.00 a night maybe, but certainly not at their rates.

The bedroom was huge with a lovely bathroom and soft furnishings. It is a shame there is no shower but with so few people in the house, walking to the shower room was not a problem.

We really really loved this place and can't wait to get back... my girlfriend is Parisian and found the whole experience utterly charming!

A lovely, welcoming guest house with breathtaking surrounds and views. Our room was huge and very comfortable with stunning views. A peaceful stroll along the stream into Ambleside which is just a few minutes away. You couldn't ask for more.

We were booked into this B and B for work as it was in a superb location (nextdoor!!) to our Job. With a warm welcome and friendly hello we were shown to our room, a hugely generous size, "spa" room, with its on bathroom attached, a very good tea station stocked to the brim and clean bedding with colour TV.

We were leaving earlier than breakfast was stated, but we delighted that Paul said he would get up a little earlier to accomodate our empty tummys adn off we went for our days work. On what was originally a 3 day stay, we did end up staying longer. As we were so happy with Foxghyll we rebooked and stayed a futher 4 nights.

Absolutely stunning views, a quiet location, and very pretty grounds, this is a delightful place to stay and puts my faith back into B&Bs.

Top marks from me! TIM

Room Tip: I'm not sure what the other rooms have to offeer, but the spa room was fantastic.
