“Friendly, comfortable guest house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2010

I have stayed at the Norcroft several times before and I have always found it a very comfortable guest house with friendly staff and owner. The rooms I have used have been larger than most guest houses (and indeed many hotels) and spotlessly clean. The service is excellent. Breakfast is first class and provides a very suitable start to an energetic day.
I stay at the Norcroft when mountain biking or walking in the northern Lake District. I can ride directly from the house to the northern fells. Paul Lamb is sympathetic to mountain bikers and chains the bikes in a locked outhouse for safety and convenience. There is a drying room for wet kit.
There is a comfortable lounge.
There are several pubs and restaurants within walking distance in the town centre.

Stayed here in August. Our bikes were stolen from the supposed 'safe storage' because the landlord failed to lock the shed...

Cramped accommodation!!!!!!!. We were a group of 17 so we knew things would be a little difficult. Me and 3 other adults in a family room. Felt "done" by being charged nearly £40 for small bunk beds, shoe-horned into a small cubbyhole next to the main bedroom. The bunk beds were obviously meant for young kids but the rooms were offered for 4 adults. This should have been made clear at the time of booking. It would have been better splitting up and finding alternative rooms elsewhere.
At breakfast, we were asked "tea or coffee?" Easy enough - 1 tea and 1 coffee please. We were forgotten whilst other tables continued to be served. It took 15 minutes to get the drinks and only after we had complained. Next came my poached eggs on toast. What a disaster. Rubbery texture on outside and the insides were completely raw!! I asked for a fried egg instead. That wasn't much better. It took forever to arrive and then was covered in grease. VERY disappointed in the service and standard of cooking. I could cook poached, boiled, fried, scrabbled eggs properly at the age of 11.
Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend it but others have their own experiences.

The very best B&B we have ever stayed at.
Breakfast was first class.
Staff 10 out of 10 for everything.

We have just spent the New Year at the Norcoft Guest House and have had a terrific experience. The Guest House has off-road parking in its own courtyard, which puts it head and shoulders above the majority of lodging properties in Penrith which have to cope with parking on the streets. The streets appear safe enough and there are few or no concerns regarding security, but the parking restrictions in Penrith must fill several volumes with their complexity.

We stayed in a very recently decorated king size room with loads of space. The room had a brand new HD flat screen TV with tens of freeview channels. The bathroom was new and very easy to live with.

The property is very clean and the staff are very friendly and intuitive, offering to solve any issues before they arise. Although there were several families in the property, we only ever saw or heard them at breakfast.

The breakfast itself was immense for me (or healthy for my wife). Everything was prepared freshly from local ingredients and there was more than enough of everything.

The hotel is literally 5 minutes gentle stroll from the very centre of Penrith with its many pubs and eating places.

Especially good points: it has parking, the hosts are friendly and it's an easy walk into Penrith for restaurants, etc. Many facilities and lots of good local information in room.

My room decor was a bit dated but it was all very clean with good quality furniture and carpet. Bathroom: brand new and sparkling clean, really good shower, towel rail etc, lovely.

The nice lady cooked me tomatoes on toast for breakfast at my request, so they definitely get my vote for flexibility! I will be staying here again when I'm next working in the area.

I stayed 4 nights at Norcroft GH & was satisfied with my 3rd storey single room ensuite. The small, clean room with one window was reasonably priced; had a super LDC tele & Paul, the host was excellent. This is a very large house, formerly the headmasters residence, with lots of rooms. There's a comfy guest lounge, large dining room, good sized carpark situated on the corner of Graham & Drovers Lane; it's a nice residental area with a bus stop of little, if any noise. A very short walk up to the phone box & Grey Bull, where I had 2 excellent meals, reasonably priced, with great service & Thaites on tap. Near town center, bus station & easy enough access to rail station & Penrith Castle ruins. This is a great base for the Lakes sights & 40 min easy ride to Carlisle train station. Local eateries delighted me - the Lowther Arms, fine meal & pint & the Tapas Bar food was great despite no draft ale. If you are looking for luxury this isn't it, however it's an excellent value.
