“Nice food...nice venue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Restaurant is based within well laid out nursery, and provides seating areas to suit most..indoors and out. Varied vegetarian menu..salads, pizzas, and nice selection of cakes, good variety of teas and coffees on offer.
Easy parking available opposite nursery..narrow village road leading to car park.

“Freshly cooked food in quirky surroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

This restaurant is in the grounds of Larch Cottage Nurseries. These are well worth a visit whether you eat at the restaurant or not. There is also a shop with stunning jewelry for sale.

The range of food is impressive, the quality more so. Be prepared, however, to wait for quite some time for your food as it is cooked to order and the service may appear slow. That's the price for quality, in my opinion well worth it. But if you want a quick bite, have something from the cafe on the ground floor.

Try and secure seating on the first floor veranda overlooking the nursery with its wonderful display of garden ornaments and pots. (Best on a good day, of course!)

I'll go back to the restaurant, which is the best recommendation any customer can give.

A final tip: it's worthwhile visiting Lowther Castle and Gardens when in the area, as well as the village of Askam with its interesting pottery.

“Good day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Went to the plant nursery on recommendation. It is outstanding. Fab plants in very unusual surroundings. As it was so very hot......in the Lakedistrict ....25deg we had to go indoors and what a find. Lovely cafe with Arched windows overlooking a pond full of goldfish and luscious planting
Waitresses were lovely even tho really busy. Homemade fresh field mushroom pizza and moreish potato wedges. Yummy.
Missed pudding to go to the Jersey ice cream parlour but the cakes did look inviting.

Overall a great visit. What more could you wish for...great plants, good food and lovely shop full of nice things. Heaven

“When is a sandwich not a sandwich”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2014

I was out with a friend for lunch and we were looking for some where we could have a light but tasty lunch and we decided to try Larch Cottage Nursery where we had previously had coffee. It was a lovely sunny day, the restaurant was very busy but the waitress found us a table upstairs inside looking on to the balcony. We looked at the menu, I could not make my mind up between a metze plate and a sandwich ( I thought that the sandwich was rather expensive at over £7) however after informing the waitress of my dietary requirements, she made inquiries and found that one of the dips contained dairy so I chose the crayfish tails sandwich with salad, my friend chose the brie and salad sandwich. We were astonished when our lunch arrived, the crayfish tails sandwich, was 2 slices of bread with a huge amount of crayfish tails surrounded by an array of delightful salads in a wonderful dressing, the brie sandwich was similar, foolishly we had ordered a side of salt and pepper potato wedges, delicious but not needed given the size of our sandwich !!!!! Everything was fresh and full of flavour. We did not know how they could have produced the sandwich and salad for the money. After lunch we had a walk around the nursery, not to be missed and a trip around the Red Barn Given the beautiful weather the setting we could have been in the hills of France or Italy, . Certainly the highlight of our lunch was "the sandwich"

“A lovely setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

We have eaten here before. Usually the hot chocolate is very nice and the sticky date cake is excellent. Today however we were left wondering if the standards are slipping a little. My mocha wasn't very warm and as we had to wait quite a while I am left wondering if it had been left to wait before being served. Also there seemed to be a lot of uncleared tables.
As it's such a fantastic location we will go back as we are hoping that today was just a blip.
