“Stay here - eat here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2010

We stayed here before in one of the smaller rooms and it was exactly that, small, but everything else was good. So good that when we returned we paid a little extra for a premium room and are glad that we did - it was excellent. Breakfast is good and the location is about as central as it gets. One thing I would emphasise is the evening meals, they're amazing. I've been to the Star of Siam in Keswick and it's very good, I've been to the Don Imtanon in Ambleside and it's very, very good, but the food Fon serves up at Shemara is the best Thai food you'll get in The Lakes! The only downsides are that the front door get locked at midnight and that loud voices can be heard through the floors on occasion.

Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Shemara Guest House. During our stay we felt nothing more than welcome. Richard and Fon are perfect hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. The guest house itself is in a perfect location - just 2 minutes walk from the town centre and has parking facilities. Room was very spacious and comfortable, exceptionally clean with fantastic views. Breakfast could not have been better with every taste covered. We also tried the Thai dinner menu which was the best Thia meal we have ever experienced and would thoroughly recommend anyone staying to try this for themselves.
Have previously stayed in a few different guest houses in Keswick but the Shemara will be our No. 1 choice in the future.

This guesthouse is very well situated for convenience in terms of being close to the market square and the lady owner (Sayfon) was lovely; so very humble and attentive at breakfast.

During our stay in the Premier room, it was a really cold room and the central heating was switched off at 8pm (hardly time for the room to heat up as it was only switched on at around 5pm and this was the end of October!).

There was evidence of damp in the room; particularly evident if you opened the window of the bathroom (it was black with accumulated mould around the inside of the frame).

Another place I tend to look in terms of confirming ,attention to detail, cleanliness and good housekeeping is the skirting boards behind the bed head - and once again I'm afraid, this did not meet my expectations.

Not the best stay for us- it wasn't the cheapest and overall we were disappointed.

In October after a refreshing walks in the cold outdoors, our idea of good accomodation in Keswick is something cozy and warm - unfortunately, in our opinion, the Shemara did not live up to the mark.

We are very sorry that these guests did not enjoy their stay with us at Shemara as much as most of our other guests do. With regard to the guests being cold we do not have our central heating on 24 hours per day for obvious reasons but we do have an oil filled electric heater in every room which is powerfull enough to warm the rooms to a very cosy temperature when the central heating is not on. I personaly can not remember what length of time the central heating was on for last October but would be suprised if it was only on until 8pm, but I may be wrong. This or any other room at Shemara does certainly not suffer from damp. We are also very sorry if there was dust behind the brass bedstead in this room, We regularly pull out all the furniture in all the bedrooms to have a good clean behind, if dust was present behind this bedstead then it will have been an oversight by us which we appologise for but can assure everyone it is not the norm. We are amazed that this reviewer classed our premier room as 'average' as it is the most popular room with our returning guests, also to imply that it was expensive for Keswick, in October last year this room cost the reviewer £60 per night for 2 people bed and breakfast for ensuite accommodation with bath and shower, this is below the avarage for Keswick guest houses. We are also very dissapointed that these guests failed to inform us of there problems they had with the accommodation throughout there 4 night stay so we could have rectified any issues they had, we also ask every departing guest if everything was to satisfaction during there stay and have no recollection of any thing being mentioned to us. Interestingly the review before this one is from a couple who stayed in the same room.

We have just returned from a wonderful and relaxing 5 night stay at Shemara Guest House. As per previous reviews Shemara is conveniently situated within 1 min walking distance from the town centre but still very quiet. Room 4 (Premium room) was lovely, clean, spacious and comfortable with scenic views of the fells, LCD tv! and bath with shower. The bathtub was very welcoming after a long tiring walk on the fells. Richard and Fon were both very hospitable, friendly and helpful and we found Fon's consistent smiles and laughter so endearing. The breakfasts at Shemara were wonderful and very filling. The vegetarian option included vegetarian sausages unlike many places that just serve eggs, toast etc without the meat. We also tried the In house Thai restaurant menu which was absolutely delicious!

We would definitely like to stay at Shemara the next time we visit Keswick and we would highly recommend this guest house to other visitors to the Lakes.

Thank you Richard and Fon!

The Shemara guest house is a real home from home. It is situated right in the middle of Keswick and only a 5 minute walk from the lake. Nothing is to much trouble for the hosts (Richard and Fon). There is a choice of breakfasts, the excellent full English is highly recommended. There are stunning views from the bedroom windows.
We look forward to staying next year (2010) our third consecutive stay whidh normally last a week

My wife and I had a fantastic stay at Shemara and will, I am sure, be returning there on all future trips to Keswick. Our room (Room 4) was spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. It has a tremendous view looking out over Latrigg and Skiddaw. The breakfasts were also top notch. Between the two of us, we tried all of the 4 breakfast options and were very pleased with all of them. Portion size was very generous and everything was cooked to perfection. The location of the guest house we found to be extremely useful. Only 2 minutes walk from the main street, we were able to get back to our comfortable room in no time when it started raining. Having a parking space in the centre of town was also very convenient. Lastly, our hosts were very friendly and provided a high standard of service throughout our stay.
