My wife and I visited the Langstrath for a long weekend over Easter and once again had a fabulous time. The inn is in Stonethwaite, a tiny hamlet off Borrowdale. The road finishes at the door of the hotel, though there's a farm track to the campsite a few hundred metres further on. Downstairs there's a bar where they always have a good selection of real beers, plus a dozen or so single malts, a dining room with about 8 tables, and a residents lounge with sofas, a PC with internet access and some board games and books.
The food in the restaurant is always excellent, with a menu of about half a dozen choices for each course, plus a couple of specials each night. Ingredients are largely local, so you can eat Herdwick lamb one night followed by fish from the local fishmonger the next. They also have a small, but good value winelist. The breakfasts are just what you want for an energetic day, and the service is always good.
Each of the bedrooms is slightly different and they are all ensuite and nicely furnished, with comfortable beds. Our preference is to get a room with a bath and shower rather than a shower only, as there's nothing like soaking in a hot bath after a long day on the fells.
But the best thing about the hotel is the location. You can walk straight out of the front door into wonderful fellwalking country, and climb Bowfell, the Langdales, Great End and the Dale Head - Maiden Moor ridge - fantastic walking!
We can't recommend the Langstrath highly enough!
