I have visited the Horse and Farrier on many occasions in the past which confirms that I have previously been very satisfied. Not last night unfortunately. With 4 grandkids in tow (ages 7 to 15), it was never going to be easy. The place was busy so we only got a table in the quietest part of the restaurant in spite of booking in advance. It took ages for anyone to take our drinks order although a different waiter came for the food order before we got the drinks!! The menu for the kids was very poor. The usual with chips (nothing with proper veg) so we ended up with all adult meals. It was difficult to get the chicken burgers that 2 of them wanted because they wanted slight variations. Very dry they were and very unattractive. I took the fish special (plaice)and the 2 older kids took the fish and chips (thankfully no complaints from these 2). The special was without doubt the worst food I have had in the Lakes for many years. It was all bones and skin in spite of the menu saying it would be skinned. I ordered sides of vegetables (only one of two was delivered) and they were truly awful. I admit to liking my veg "well done" but the consensus view was that these were almost raw. Mostly left.
The menu, helpfully, said to tell management if there was a problem. I did so when I paid the bill. I really was anxious to get out of there. The response was almost nothing. A mumbled sorry but nothing else and no serious enquiry to find out what the problem had been. As I said earlier, the worst meal for a long long time and I will definitely not be going back in a hurry. I have eaten in the chain of pubs/restaurants of which this is part and not had any recent problems. What a shame
