i have never felt a stronger need to share a review of accommodation than i do today. as a regular visitor to the lake district who has stayed in a variety of styles, from campsites to luvury cottages, i would say i am in a good psoition to compare value for money and overall standards. So as a last minute one night stay myself and my partner booked a room at the Twa Dogs Keswick. This Jennings pub serves food has several rooms private parking and is a 10 min walk from the centre of town. So far so good. On arrival we waited at the bar to check in and to collect keys. The barman was cheery enough even if he seemed overworked and on his own. We were told to pay upfront in full before the keys were given and also to ay if we wanted breakfast! Untrusting and unusual, but aparently this is to assist us with our holiday budget! Yeah right. Anyway walking through the scruffy poole room we were led up to our room, a double en-suite. To say old fashioned may give a sense of charm, so i say dated. But it had been cleaned it just did not make you feel clean. The bed had two thin sheets and an old blanket in the middle plus a patterend cover over. It was positoned opposite the yellow stained netted window. The bathroom had mix-matched walpapers and a stained shower had been cleaned, but had a sort of unclean feeling, grubby, that screaming knowledge of how many others may have been in before us. Nice. The tv, kettle and lights did work, but a hairdryer would have been usefull. However, its a pub, its one night, the sun was shining so after 10 mins we get out to enjoy the real reason we are in Keswick. On returning we decide to have a drink. A tiny (and i mean tiny) glass of wine and a beer, overpriced, but again the barman was polite and friendly. Not wishing to stay in the dingy bar to eat, we freshened up as best we could and with wet hair walked into Keswick for food. On returning and feeling like a nightcap, we asked for a drink. At the bar was the husband and wife team who are in charge. So on our first meeting hellos and welcome, even if a little late would have been appreciated. Instead we were met with looks of distain. As we bgan to speak i was insulted by both, apparently my ability to speak correctly and the lack of desire to live in Blackpool made me a snob! The wife was obviously worse for wear and the husband - well maybe but definately rude. We said we would not be having breakfast and left. At 9.00 Sunday morning i was awoken by the loud brekfast bell, followed by a hammering at the door shortly after with shouts of "brekafast". I said as we had done the previous night, thank you but no thank you for brekafast, which was not met by an appology but by more insults. We were out by 9.45. We will not be back. The Twa Dogs could give Keswick landlords and landladys a bad reputation if you had no other experience of the usual high quality and warm lakeland hospitality usually found in this area. Grumpy and bitter and rude and ever so slightly unclean i would now rename the Twa the Twa* and be done.
