We stayed at the Highfield for two nights over a long weekend. Having never visited the Lakes before we found that it was really well located to explore Keswick and the surrounding coutryside. We'd recommend a visit to Booths supermarket (only a five minute walk away) for picnic provisions and beers and cumberland sausages to take home as souvenirs! The hotel is a very short distance from both the town and Derwent Water, and the room that we stayed in (room 4 on the second floor) had a balcony overlooking Derwent Water and the surrounding fells which was beautiful.
The hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the room was spotlessly clean and had been recently refurbished, which meant that it looked much better than the photo on the hotel's website! The linen and towels were fresh and crisp and there was an excellent array of teas, coffees, biscuits, mineral waters and even fruit laid out in the room for us on arrival.
We booked full board and would definitely recommend doing this as the food is excellent. Before dinner guests are invited into the lounge for canapes while looking over the menu, and both four course meals we had were lovely. The breakfast is very good too, and the dining room is lovely, particularly if you manage to get a table by the window. Drinks are also very reasonable priced, and the drinks menu has a great range of wines, malt whiskies and locally produced beers. The only slight criticism would be that there were a couple of cost cutting measures employed which seemed a bit mean to us - for example I only got two scallops with my scallop starter on the Friday night (three would have been nicer), and there is a £2.50 surcharge if you order the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast. The toilet roll in the room was also really cheap and poor quality which didn't seem in keeping with the general feeling of luxury.
Those are the only criticisms though and they didn't detract from a lovely stay in an excellent hotel.
