“Nice pub. sub par food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

Went to keswick for a weekends mountain biking in april, afterwards we walked in to Keswick and finding the pubs on or around station street were choc we wandered around, finally ending up at the pack horse. Its a nice cozy pub with some good ales, but the food isnt up to scratch. I ordered the lamb shank. It was dry chewy and (very) well done. Nice pub, just don't go for food (unless the rest are full ;-)

“Surprisingly good food in this pub!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

We were pleasantly surprised when we visited this pub on Friday 5th April. We had been walking around for a while looking for a place that served food late as it was 9:15 and we were hungry. We stumbled into the Pack Horse and were really glad that they serve food till 9:30. The bar staff were really friendly and welcoming and they had a good selection of ales on tap.

The food arrived very swiftly and was of lovely pub quality with really good vegetarian options including a delicious mushroom and brie wellington which I had. My partner had the lamb which was also very good and both were served with nicely cooked seasonal vegetables in a garlic butter - lovely!

“A few nice drinks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

We visited the Pack Horse whilst on our anniversary weekend in Keswick, we didn't eat there but had a few drinks. I find it a lovely traditional country pub, the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was great, chatting to other patrons is something you just don't get elsewhere. The drinks were a bit pricey at over £10 for a glass of wine and a bottle of Ginger Beer, so couldn't stay there all night but great for a couple of drinks, plus I guess it's to be expected in tourist areas.

The one down side was waiting to get served, we weren't in a hurry so didn't matter a great deal but hubby was at the bar for some time. The second time we went in it was very quiet and although we got served without issue, some other people came in a little while after us and walked out as no-one was serving, I couldn't see the bar but assume there was no staff on.

This is a shame as people were leaving without trying the fab ales.

Will definitely visit again, but hoping more staff on the bar.

“Solid Pub Grub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

If you want some decent pub grub served by friendly staff in a cosy atmosphere this is the place for you.
The steak pudding was excellent and very filling and my wife said the scampi was some of the best she had ever had.
You can have a sample of 3 of the real ales they have on tap for the price of a pint to help you choose.
Do try this pub you won't be disappointed
