“Friendly, accommodating and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

I was hoping this would be a lovely place, and I was not disappointed!. Situated in the heart of Borrowdale, and right on the Coast-to-coast route, this was the perfect spot to find ourselves, wet, cold, muddy and tired after the second day of our walk. Rachel took all our wet stuff and washed and dried it in short order. She brought restorative cups of tea, and drove us down to the local pub to get dinner. Rooms were spotless and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was lovely. Thanks for a wonderful stay, Rachel.

We loved Gillercombe, Rachel is such an interesting lady, and the house is spotless. She has walked the Coast to Coast, and knows exactly what walkers need to make their stay perfect. Great breakfast, and huge packed lunch provided.

Rachel welcomed us with tea and had everything set up for us already. The rooms are nicely appointed and have very nice views over the valley. Having access to a large bathroom after a long day of hiking did wonders. Rachel also provided us with key recommendations for dinner and the next day's hike. We departed with a hearty breakfast.

We stayed at GILLERCOMBE whilst undertaking the coast to coast walk. We were welcomed by Rachel with tea and a lovely selection of biscuits. The rooms aren't ensuite but the facilities are good and immaculately clean. Rachel was very helpful with our wet boots and coats and they were dry by morning. We were asked what time we wanted breakfast and as we had a long walk to Patterdale next day we requested 7.30am, Rachel was happy to provide it at that time. We were offered a good choice, were asked if we wanted more and the food was delicious.
Rachel offered us a lift down to the pub to have our evening meal.
Rachel has a great of knowledge about the area and gave us good advice on the next leg of our walk. She provided us with a good packed lunch. Unfortunately I was taken into hospital and missed two stages of the walk before rejoining my husband at Kirby Stephen and finishing the walk. We are doing the walk again next year and we will definitely be booking to stay there again.

There seems to be two opposing views on this B&B judging by the reviews to date - and as a seasoned B&B user, I am firmly in the positive camp.

First, if en suite facilities are essential for you, then avoid - simply because there are none. They usually rate highly on my list but the facilities are good otherwise with a good bathroom, two WCs upstairs and a sink in the bedroom. The house is spotlessly clean,

If I had a stream of sweaty, smelly coast to coasters coming through I think I would want them washed and scrubbed asap too. And given the limited shower facilities, it makes sense to hurry up that process for the sake of all. I think that is why individuals may not be encouraged to take baths too. I would have welcomed an immediate shower but as it happened, it was in use when I arrived - so I was ushered into Rachel's lounge to join another guest and given a wonderfully refreshing pot of tea first (it must be the water) while watching the spotted woodpeckers in the garden.

Rachel was helpful throughout and happy to chat. The stripping of the beds whilst at breakfast is unusual I agree but breakfast was excellent and the packed lunch good. This B&B is convenient for both Rosthwaite and Stonethwaite but I would recommend eating in Stonethwaite (despite Rachel's advice to the contrary). Despite the lack of an en suite, this B&B was in the top 4 of the 14 I stayed in during my walk.

I arrived at this haven with 3 other kiwis and our friendly hostess presented us with a nice cup of tea and biscuits. We stayed the one night on our coast2coast journey. Very homely place in a peaceful setting. Nice bright bedroom with shared bathroom, very clean. Our hostess made us very welcome, as did her right hand man [pet parrot] and gave us a good breakfast to start the day. She also made us a wonderful packed lunch to take with us. Would definitely stay again if in the district. Thanks :)

This is the ladies house and she keeps it to a very high standard. Take time to have a chat to the owner as she has had a very interesting life which will surprise you.
