My wife and I stayed at Ferndene Guest House 4 nights, June 24-27, 2010. It is a decent basic accommodation, run by nice people and the location is a short walk into town. We are hikers and Richard is a valuable source for trail information and willing to take the time to advise you. He was very helpful.

We had room 7 in the annex (an ensuite room) which is quite small and has a sink in the room itself, separate from the bathroom. We simply did not have enough space in the room for us, our luggage and backpacks without juggling things from bed to chair to floor. It was the only room in five weeks of B&b stays that presented that challenge. The bathroom is also quite small and has a stall shower that is difficult to turn around in without touching the walls. We realize that Keswick is an area in demand, but after staying in lots of other B&Bs on this trip, the charge for such a basic room seemed high for what it was.

Parking is an issue. There is off street parking on the property. Guest vehicles are "stacked" in rows, with cars in front of one another. So somebody is usually blocked in.
Richard does his best to be a traffic cop and asks people to move in order to let other people out. But we felt "trapped" and resorted to the very tight street parking in the area.
In fairness, this parking arrangement may be common among the B&Bs in the neighborhood. We saw another B&B owner being a traffic cop too. But if we had to do it over again with a car, we would look for a B&B with unrestricted on-site parking. If you plan to stay in Keswick with a car, it would be wise to find out the details of the parking beforehand.

Breakfast was average. Overall feel is of a German Pension.

This is what we felt when we came this summer to Ferndene and the lovely Marsden family for the 4th time. We prefer this guest house because of the friendly hosts, always wishing a "good morning" with a warm smile and a lovely breakfast, and we enjoy the clean beds and rooms. And it's a great advantage that the guesthouse has its own parking facilities! We love coming back, and has already made reservations for next year.

Just spent 2 nights at the Ferndene. We had a room in the annex. The bathroom was a bit basic, but I understand that will be renovated shortly. I personally found the bed a bit too soft, and we have a king size bed at home, so I nearly fell out of the bed a couple of times! The bed linen was lovely quality, as were the bath towels. The curtains were lovely and thick as well. The parking could be a pain, but we parked outside next to the church so it wasn't an issue for us. Christine and Richard were a lovely couple, we told Christine we were going on the boat trip around the lake, and she recommended a couple of places to stop off at which were very nice. The breakfast was huge and good quality, I really liked the way the cereals were laid out and the bowl of chopped fresh fruit changed in variety the 2 days we were there. There was loads of recommendations for pub food, we tried the George at the bottom, I had the half a 'cow pie', never seen so much meat! As we left, they also suggested a route for us on the way home through Buttermere, which was very scenic. All in all, a good time!

We want to ferndene guest house for a romantic getaway before a 2days walk to Wasdale. It was perfect! the guesthouse is located between the lake and the main city street. In front of a church. The room was very nice and cosy, with a view on the montains. The bed was very comfortable and the room very clean. The breakfast excellent and the hosts charming. It was a perfect stay!

Stayed on 3rd night of Cumbria Way. After a long hard day's walking received a warm welcome from Christine. Beautifully decorated room, spotlessly clean and every attention to detail. Lovely hot showers and comfy bed were well needed. Packed on our way next morning with excellent breakfast and even took photos for us in the garden! Highly recommended!

We received a very warm welcome from Richard and Christine. Having never visited Keswick before, we were very impressed with the extensive information booklet in our room, which provided all the information you could possibly need on what's available in the town and recommendations for places to eat along with a handy streetmap. Our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean and breakfast was delicious! We had a lovely, lovely time and hope to return again in the future.
