Stayed at the Appletrees over the May bank holiday weekend and really enjoyed it. We had the twin room right at the top with great views across the golf course, behind which you can see the lake and fells. Probably one of the best views you can get from Keswick.
Everything was fine, service and breakfast. Small downside would be a small TV and a very weak shower, but that's only if I wanted to be picky. This is a B&B and not a hotel, and for the price especially in the nicest village at the heart of the Lake District I really felt I had good value for money.
The guest house is on a quiet back road and there is limited parking at the back (2 spaces) and in the street. The nice views from the room do not mean you are far from it all however. You are only 5 minutes walk from the centre, with all the pubs, restaurants and museums.
Talking about which, there are plenty of things to do around, like the funny Puzzle Place museum which is full of optical illusions including a room where you can see yourself shrink! I would avoid the Cars of the Stars museum though as the fact you cannot take photos is a big disappointment.
You are also only 10 minutes drive away from Derwent Water, one of the main lakes in the area and in my opinion the nicest one. At the back of it you can climb the famous Catbells fell, where you will have stunning 360 degree views of the lake and Keswick in the distance.
If you are short of ideas, the owners are always happy to discuss with you places to go and things to do during breakfast, and as someone else mentioned can also arrange a packed lunch for you. So really I would recommend this B&B as a base to anyone wanting to spend a nice relaxing time in the Lake District or who wants to explore...
