“Nice, convenient, comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2010

I booked for 3 nights over half term, myself and my 8yr old son. Hotel was nice, rooms clean and comfortable, well equiped and serviced. We ate in the resturant 2 nights (as part of the deal), food was ok, service not so good but more staff would sort that out. Breakfast was average, not a great deal of choice, would have preferred some fresh fruit, pastries and breakfast cooked to order instead of buffet style. Leisure centre was really good, nice clean changing rooms and pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, it was never too busy which was nice. I would recommend for a short break. Location is great, 2 mins walk into the heart of Kendal and 20/30 mins drive into Windermere,

Thank you for your feedback, all feedback, positive or negative is always welcomed. We apologise if the service in the restaurant in the evening was not up to scratch, it is something that the manager will be dealing with.
If you do decide to stay with us again, please ask your waiter or waitress in the morning for a cooked to order breakfast and we will always be happy to prepare something for you.

This was a last-minute booking and we have had a lovely time. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Ample space and good facilities. Bathroom was lovely. The only thing that irritated us was the poor quality lighting, plenty of lights but all very dim. We enjoyed our meal each night ( all included in the special offer price) and the menu was very varied. The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and helpful.
We made use of the leisure facilities and had the use of the under cover parking, a boon in this cold weather.
The only area that disappointed us was the lounge. It lacked character. A cheap electric fire sits in a lovely fireplace. An living fire would have made all the difference, and the furniture was sparse.

Thank you for your review, we certainly take on board what you said about the lounge, we are in the process of organizing more for the lounge to create a more comfortable atmosphere.
We are really glad that you enjoyed your meals and found the staff friendly and helpful, it is always great to pass good feedback like this on to them

We arrived at this hotel on the 1st Jan 2010 with a little bit of concern having read some of the not very complimentary reviews. Our concern was completly wasted we were greeted by a pleasant young lady on reception and were given our keys. Unfortunately, a simple mistake was made in that she give us the wrong room, the room we were given had not been prepared or serviced. When we returned to reception the room was immediately changed with an apology from the young lady. The room we were then allocated was lovely, clean, and very comfortable, the en-suite was beautiful and spotless. A simple mistake had been made and rectified without question. The rest of our stay was enjoyable and totally without incident, all the staff were friendly and helpful, the breakfast was 1st class and served in a relaxed and pleasant room overlooking the river Kent. The weather outside was cold, a shivering -3 degrees but the hotel was warm and very comfortable. The leisure facilities were good and very clean and well presented. We were not disappointed with any aspect of our stay, except as vegetarians the choice of meals were limited, having said that if we had asked then maybe we would have been offered other choices but to be honest it wasn't a big issue for us. A very relaxed stay after a frantic Christmas....Thank you Riverside Hotel

Stayed here and found it extremely good value We booked a special 2 night half board option the hotel is very clean cozy and in the centre of Kendal with free parking
The hotel is being discreetly refurbished we have paid much more for hotels that do not come up to the standerd that this one has offered us on this stay.
The pool and health suite looks fantastic although we did not use them
The food ain the restuarant is very good and it is staffed in a very cost effective way we must remember there is a reccesion at the moment and this establishment is managing very well in its own way to ride the reccesion with minimal effect on its customers.
If you are looking for 5 star service then pay three to four times more at another hotel.
If you are looking for Travelodge/premier Inn simular type rooms and costings but with many extra benifits for the same price or cheaper then this is the hotel for you.
The reception staff always smile and speak when you pass by
Thank You Riverside for a lovely stay!

Thank you very much for such a wonderful review. All the staff have been working very hard at the Riverside Hotel, taking part in extra training and they are pleased that this is appreciated. The hotel has started a renovation program which is well over half way. We are very happy receive comments like this it makes all the hard work worth while.

Frantically booked this hotel as a last minute search for half term, confirmed booking and then decided to check Trip Adviser (yes i know, i'm a numpty). I was horrified to read the reviews listed against the hotel as they were so mixed. The poor ones really concerned me so much so, i had to call the hotel for an explanation. I spoke to the manager who talked me through the bad reviews and reassured me to continue with the booking.
Arrived Monday and have to admit i was pleasantly surprised, ok the hotel in side is still a bit dated and getting to breakfast each day was a task (rabbits warren) but the leisure facilities, bar and our room were very good. I can't comment on the food as we did not eat there but i was impressed by the staff and their helpfulness . I would rate this hotel as good, unfortunately the trip adviser scale only offers average or very good
This hotel is ideally placed for thoses looking to explore the lake district for a few days but not wanting to pay the extortionant prices and also very close to the motorway.

Arriving Sunday afternoon, I had a swim watched some TV and then went down to dinner at approximately 8.00pm. Unfortunately the menue of cod, chicken in mushroom sauce and vegitarian option was a disappointment after reading the sample menue on the website. Taking the attitude of "Why spoil the evening" we opted for a Sirloin and Fillet steak at a supplement. What followed was a complete disaster. One lukewarm soup,
one pate with chewy cold toast, possibly from breakfast, then the two steaks arrived both with the same very unpleasant taste accompanied by a little dried up sauce due to it being served on extremely hot plates. Not wishing to risk food poisoning we left both meals having only taken a couple of bites each. We were then told the management would not be available until 3.00pm the following day and not prepared to risk a breakfast from this kitchen and living only 30 minutes away we decided to pack our bags and leave for home at 9.00pm. Now reading the Trip Advisor comments on this and other hotels in the group it would appear this was not an isolated incident.

We would like to apologise to this guest for his disappointing meal in our restaurant. Our General Manager has tried to contact this guest several times by telephone and letter to discuss his stay but so far we have received no reply. We are always sorry to hear that any guest has not enjoyed their meal, but we would like to point out that all other guests in the restaurant that evening did enjoy their meal, including the 4 other guests who opted for the steak. The plates are kept hot as this is what most guests prefer, we do not like to serve our meals on cold plates. The hotel did of course have management on duty that evening and it was our Assistant Manager who spoke to this guest although admittedly our General Manager was having an evening off work. If we had been given the chance to rectify any problems we would have, and we have made sure that this guest left the hotel feeling like they enjoyed their stay with us.
