“Hit and miss”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

Friendly, helpful staff - good location for Kendal and the train station. Hotel is 'tired' with rooms and general upkeep not the best. Restaurant food was a hit and miss affair - some dishes were pretty good, others were really poor quality. Simple things such as breakfast, no fresh fruit on offer and the turn over on certain items was not high enough - leaving food under hot plates for far too long to even consider eating. River views nice - shame cannot have the windows open as smoking area below the rooms from the bar downstairs. Deliveries for the hotel being left in the lobby all day, cleaning products for the bathrooms left under the sinks and other communal areas either in poor condition or untidy. Overall would have given a 2 star, however the staff made the difference.

we had no problem finding a parking space. Had a lovely welcome at reception our room was not ready so receptionist put our luggage in a room for us and said we were welcome to sit in the bar and she would come and let us know when it was ready. We only had a short wait and when we arrived in our room the Kendal Castle suite we were very pleased with it. It had two separate rooms one with a sofa , chair , footstool coffe table desk and tv . Then you had your bedroom with plenty of wardrobe space, another tv and a dressing table with plug points in the right places so that I could plug in my straighteners. The bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was also lovely with a shower over the bath. Despite other reviews about the rooms being dusty ours were spotless and there was plenty of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits on the welcome tray. We also had lovely views over the river. Breakfast was lovely you had a good selection of cereal, fruit , juices ect and a good selection of sausage, bacon, black pud, beans and two types of egg (scrambled or fried) the staff were great they couldnt do enough for you friendly smiley faces though they were run off their feet could do with extra staff. The hotel was very close to plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distant which was an extra bonus. Other than the rain on saturday we had a lovely time . We could have chosen to use the pool, sauna , jacuzzi or gym but being shy we stayed in our lovely room and relaxed and read a good book. Our only downfall for our stay apart from the rain was the noise from the traffic and when the other residents used their water the waterworks in our room could be heard. But we closed the windows and the rooms were lovely so this wasnt really a problem. We would definately use this hotel again and reccomend to our friends.

The location was great, the staff were lovely, the room was huge, pool was perfect for us. However, why do places that accept dogs always seem to be dirty? We had to move the furniture to better position the travel cot, I don't think anyone had moved it to clean in years! Surely that's something that should be done regularly. It was very off putting!

Thank you for staying with us and your 4-star review. I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay, but want to apologise for the dust issue. Don't blame the dogs though; we'll sort it! Thanks again.

The first thing to say about our stay at Riverside Hotel was that we had a great view of the River Kent and of Kendal Castle. The Hotel is situated in a great location sitting alongside the River and within walking distance of the town centre, it was also in a great location for our touring needs of the Lake District.

The room was spacious and very comfortable. The room looked like it had been recently refurnished which was nice, the only downside was that it looked like they needed to give the room a repaint as some of the walls were a bit dirty, but that was probably the only downside to the room, didn't really bother us that much. As for the 5 nights stay, the bed was probably the most comfy beds in recent stays we have slept in. Plus bonuses included a decent size tv and the storage space was just right.

The staff were pleasant throughout our stay with a friendly greeting from the receptionist when we arrived. Breakfast staff were friendly and helpful and always had a morning smile on their face.

On arrival on the 7th of August 2013 the hotel didn't look much from the entrance but it was very nice one inside, reception personel were very friendly and helful and our room was just down 6 steps.
The residents were confused by the lift as when the doors opened every floor looked the same and so people thought they had not moved and got back in the lift and tried again it was so funny.

On entering our room it all looked very clean apart from the bathroom that had a very grubby looking floor and dirt around the grouting and shower panal of the wet room we had. (no bath) also the hotel dosen't supply any soap thats the first time i have stayed anwhere where they don't give you soap.
And the shower was very slow and toilet didn't always flush first time.
It was very hot and so we opened the window only to be invaded by enormouse spiders and so we closed it very quickly and never opened it again during our stay, which was resulting in being very hot and stuffy even though we had a fan in the room on 24 hours.

The pool was a bit cold but was just average size not really big enough for a good swim, it did have a jacuzzi though.
Large TV but disapointed that there was only 10 chanals.
Cob webs in the bar and comunal area cealings and in corners.

The outside seating area wasn't cleaned from the night before and there were full ashtays and empty glasses and rubbish the next morning, not very pleasant to see or smell first thing, also a little scary at night as there were bats flying around the bridge that is quite close to the patio.

The view of the river from our room and in fact in the entire hotel was nice.

Breakfast was awful and tasted of old fat the eggs were not cooked properly and the toast was not even toasted it was barely brown at all and cold.
Would not recomend the food.

We never tried the gym but it looked quite good and very busy.

Thanks for staying and for your review. I can assure you that we definitely supply soap and it must have been on oversight that none was in your room on arrival; I do apologise for that. Our river location does make for a bit more wildlife; not only bats catching bugs but otters occasionally too! Thanks for your constructive comments; they will help us going forward.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Having stayed here before, I had no hesitation in booking again for a weekend in August, however, when I checked the latest reviews I began to wonder if I had made a mistake. Absolutely not! This place remains a gem, and I am struggling to find why a number of reviewers have not been particularly kind to this hotel. For a start, the road isn' t really noisy overnight, in fact I left the windows open for the summer breeze and the only vehicle which irritated was a police siren at 2 am, not sure why he needed his siren in a deserted town at that time, but hey, who am I to complain? The room is spacious, clean and has lovely wooden furniture, and 3 chairs, like, the last time I stayed at a 4 star we got one chair and very little extra furniture. The bathroom again, is clean spacious, the shower is great, and lots of towels and toiletries. Decent large tv, and wi fi, free, throughout, no £20 charge to use for 24 hours like some major chains. Car park, next door, under cover, free. Staff are happy and friendly, bar well stocked, and I really liked the Hawkeshead lager, so, what is there to complain about for a 3 star county town hotel? Nothing. So come here for a Cumbrian break and you won't be disappointed. Oh, and the breakfast is pretty good too, fresh, and well replenished, even at 9.30

We are un-seasoned Hotel travellers - used to caravans/lodges etc. We booked this trip to coincide with our younger children away on Scout camp. We arrived in torrential rain on Monday and all 3 off us (including dog) were drenched. We booked through Hotel.com and read the confirmation as book in time 11am. It was in fact 3pm but giving our circumstances, the receptionist asked the housekeeping staff to finish the room they were doing and do ours as priority. We were offered coffee at the bar and were in our room by 11.40am - absolutely fantastic service. We chose this hotel because it was so relaxed towards dogs - no qualms at all and the staff all fussed her during our 2 night stay. We booked the Kendal Castle Suite which was a huge bed, en suite bath/shower room and seperate living area. 2 x 32" TVs, coffee making facilities, iron/trouser press, room service available at a cost of £2.50 per tray. The Hotel had a gym and pool free of charge to customers, we used the pool which was very small but good temperature, we had to depart at 6.30pm as it was used by the public as a aqua aerobics session. It also had a spa pool which was lovely and hot, steam room and sauna. Free towels were available if you'd forgotten yours. The Hotel had a restaurant serving al a carte which had to be booked in advance and also meals served in the Tannery Bar - which we had and enjoyed (I had Salmon, salad and minty new potatoes at a cost of £10) - our dog could also be with us to dine which was a bonus. Breakfast was lovely - cereal, fruit, yoghurts, juice, tea, coffee, toast and full cooked breakfast including black pudding, scrambled or fried eggs, best bacon, cumberland sausage, best mushrooms I've ever eaten and beans. Breakfast was buffett style and you could simply 'fill your boots'! Our doggie enjoyed our leftovers too :). Reading other reviews they mention the Hotels 'tired' look - I would agree and suggest some flowers, ornaments - just personal touches would make things more desireable - but as most people use the hotel as a base to explore the lakes - like we did - this hotel is more than adequate and we had a lovely stay.

Room Tip: The Kendal Suite gives views over the river and town - set on a corner

Thank you for posting this nice review. I think others will find it most informative as you neatly summarise many of the amenities we have to offer. We are on to Hotels.com about that check-in time; the way it is worded is almost incomprehensible and I can definitely understand why you thought check-in was at 11 am. i'm happy we were able to sort things out quickly and efficiently for you. I also hope the next time you are looking for a good base in the Lakes that we will see you again.
