Went to Kendal for a long week end from 28th June to 1st July 2013. Booked the Riverside Hotel in Kendal, as only family rooms were available we took one of those (room 309). We arrived a good hour an a quarter before the stated check in time of 15:00, but as our room was ready, were allowed to check in with no problems. We were in a room on the 3rd floor, so used the lift (access to it was actually down a flight of stairs from reception). Don't know what the other rooms were like, but the family room consisted of one double and One single bed. This was fine for a couple as we were. The view from the window was over the river which was okay. The bathroom was nice and modern, shower over the bath with a screen and nice tiles throughout. There was a 37" inch (could have been 40" but I'm guessing) flatscreen Philips TV on the wall which was tuned into a few (but not all) freeview channels. Next to reception was the gym and an indoor swimming pool /spa with steam room and sauna which is free to use if you are a guest, we used it twice during our stay. The Hotel does cater quite alot for Childrens swimming lessons, and also uses the pool for birthday parties, so you could find yourself waiting to use the pool at times. Drinks in the bar are reasonably priced, and the breakfasts are the usual hotel fare of fruit, cereals and toast, plus of course the usual self service full English breakfast. We noted that some customers had complained about the breakfast in reviews we had read, but as far as we could see there was absolutely nothing wrong with them, we always found them to be hot and not short of anything. The Hotel is showing signs of age, by that I mean marks on the cream coloured wallpaper in the halls, plus other odds and sods, but that is to be expected as no Hotel stays pristine for long. One problem we did have was in trying to get the room safe to work, reported the problem to reception, who told us someone would look at it, well if they did then thats all they did, as it was still not working when we left! The car park adjoining the hotel is the underground variety, with barrier entrances and exits. We were in a 4 x 4 and found the spaces to be on the small side, as we had got there early in the afternoon there were plenty of spaces free, so parked in one of the few larger spaces available. We went to Windermere by train (we hadn't intended to do this) the following day, as the station was only a few hundred yards away, and the return fare for two adults was £9.20p, thus saving tthe hassle of first finding and then paying for a parking slot in Windermere. Quite by accident we discovered that you could use pensioners bus passes on the stage coach buses that run in the area. It is a mile and a half from the train station in Windermere to Bowness ferry departure points, as it was down hill it wasn't to bad, but we didn't fancy walking back up the hill. In the queue in front of us was a lady who used her bus pass so we followed suit with no problems. We quizzed the driver as to whether we could use the pass for longer trips around the area, and were told yes we could. The following day we went to Gassmere by bus (the bus station is also just a few hundred yards away from the Hotel), had we realised this the day before, we could have gone to Windermere by bus for nothing, and it only takes about 15 minutes longer to get there than the train. As we were on B & B at the Hotel we went out each evening for an evening meal. We found a Wetherspoons pub which was very good value for money and the meals even included an alcholic or soft drink. We used this pub on the Friday (fish night), Saturday (had steak) and the Sunday we were there. I would thoroughly recommend this pub on the Friday and Saturdays, but must admit that the Sundays offering was nowhere near as good, if you opt for the roast dinner like we did. Summing up, would we use the Riverside Hotel again? Yes we would, no problem. If you want everything smelling of fresh paint and looking like it has never been used before, than you won't like this Hotel, if on the other hand you are like us and want a fair degree of comfort plus a pool etc, then you won't be dissappointed.
