“Kendal castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2013

Kendal Castle is well worth visiting while in the beautiful Lake District. It is quite a climb, a steep path which ever way you choose to walk to get there, but here are places to sit and recover!
I choose the easier way to get up there, a path where you had magnificent views of Kendal and district, a true panoramic view of the Southern Lake District.
The castle itself is a large ruin, but well preserved, a lot of information is given, it is pleasant to walk around and easy access to the higher part of the castle, where you have good views and a good place to take photographs, not only of the castle but of the surrounding countryside. The walk down to Kendal is quite easy, I chose a path leading to the Town through a nice Park, which took about fifteen minutes, I must admit one needs to be reasonably fir to walk up to the Castle!

“An astonishing place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

Kendal Castle is a bit hidden in the hills above Kendal, a part of the landscape, but worths a visit. Some might think that it's only ruins, but perhaps this way it tells you more of his history and the reason why the castle was built. I think it's the best site to snap a panoramic photo of Kendal and take a walk. Unfortunately, it's not suitable for everybody. Reaching the top could be dirty and slippery if you are not well prepared and accustomed. I wish it could be safely visited by night but it's not enough illuminated. Anyway, it's a must if you visit Kendal.

“Home, once fit for a Queen....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

Kendal castle dominates the town's skyline. Although a ruin now, it is well worth the short walk to the top of the hill, as the views across the valley are impressive. Reputedly the home of the Parr family, there are several display boards dotted around the site that explain the history and original layout. The family's eldest daughter, Catherine, became Henry VIII's sixth wife and was Queen of England from 1543 to 1547. Legend has it that there was once a tunnel linking the fortress to the Castle Dairy in the town below. This is the oldest building still in regular use in Kendal (also an excellent restaurant) and is worth a visit too. During festivals and on Bonfire Night, firework displays are held inside the castle walls.

“Steep Climb, Look for the easier way up.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

We walked up the very steep hill from the river, beside the ski slope. It was a gruelling climb but the view from the top was excellent, The castle is a ruin and takes a lot of imagination to see how it was in its heyday. The story boards are very good and I would say it was worth the climb. However, we did find a much easier way down.

“Worth the walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

It's a steep walk up to this castle ruins but it's worth it for the fantastic views across Kendal and into the Lakes beyond. There isn't much of the castle left, but information boards provides information about the remains of the the ruins and what they once functioned as.
