During a quick visit to Kendal we spotted the Artisan and had an excellent breakfast complimented by really good coffees
The food was fresh and the service was very friendly

“Customer Service Poor.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2014

Tend to go here on a daily basis to get a coffee albeit a free one due to the loyalty card scheme. Unfortunately as soon as the staff either recognise you or realise you have a loyalty card they are not interested. If they do not like the loyalty scheme they shouldn't offer it.
There is one particular member of staff who in my opinion really shouldn't work there he honestly seems so unhappy. He ignores the fact there are customers waiting to be served. This has happened on more than one occasion.
There seems to be only one member of staff who is generally happy in there. He is walking with a crutch and still manages to smile and be nice and try and serve you at the very first possible time. While trying to balance his tray.
Business associates in the past who have come from Manchester have stood for so long to be served, they had to walk out and buy a sandwich from the store instead.
Understand at busy periods it is hard and demanding but I feel customer service should be much better regardless.

Such a shame.

“What happened?????”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

Having had a really nice meal at Artisan before, my partner and I haven't even considered trying elsewhere for our sunday lunch.
On arrival, we chose a table outside as it was a rather pleasant day and we both enjoy a cigarette with our beverage.
The only available table has not been cleared yet but we were sure this would be promptly rectified. After several minutes the table still hasn't been attended to, so I've decided to go inside and at least try and acquire some menus for us to have a look at.
After a few more minutes we were asked by one of the waitresses whether we were ready to order to which we replied yes, however, instead of taking our order she decided to start clearing tables around us (bare in mind our table still wasn't cleared!!!).
The menu seems to have shrunk a great deal since our last visit, which was rather disappointing, nevertheless we have managed to find something pleasing.
On realising there was no ashtray on the table, (and still no sign of the waitress to take our order) I have yet again gone inside to see if it was ok to have one. The young waitress appeared to have been a little confused by my request and when she eventually turned up at our table with some form of saucer resembling dish, she was told by her colleague she's not to give those out as ashtrays. At last, our order has been taken and the table cleared. We were also given an ashtray (from another table, it was full of tea??!! which the waitress acknowledged, yet did nothing to rectify it!)
My partner chose the breakfast and I had the artisan burger. The whole bottom half of my burger bun was soggy, almost as if it had been put on a wet plate. Chips were slightly undercooked and lacked the "freshly cooked" appearance. It was a real shame as the burger meat was fabulously tasty. This place obviously has a vast range of top quality ingredients but somehow doesn't appear to master the execution.
Same applies to the breakfast, everything seemed to have been barely cooked, toast could have only been described as a warmed up bread (it barely had any colour let alone crunch), except for the egg, which was truly overcooked.
Overall experience was immensely disappointing and I'm sorry to say we won't be visiting again. This place has got a potential to be great but the service and lack of attention to detail let it down.

“Rude and useless staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014 via mobile

Only use this cafe because we get a free drink with the Booths loyalty card. But even that deal isn't worth the hassle. The staff are not interested, took our order for one tea and one coffee plus scones, walked five paces then returned saying she had forgotten what we wanted!!!!
I'd rather pay more for friendly service and where your custom is appreciated.

“Should be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2014

Very ordinary menu. Prince Charles opened Artisan when it sold local food and had a small cafe/restaurant. They gradually gave up on local food downstairs and expanded the eating area. It had a good start with interesting food reflecting the superior food store upstairs.
Now it feels as if they've given up. The menu is limited and boring. Quality is ok but nothing special. Many other places offer better. A shame.
