Just returned from 2 nights at this hotel, was dreading it as there had been a number of poor reviews. I really don't know what people expect from a two star, very reasonably priced hotel. On arrival the manager greeted us, he has quite a sense of humour. We were allocated our room. A decent sized, twin in muted colours, decorated to a good standard. The beds were very comfortable with immaculate white bedding. There were ample hangers in the wardrobe and 9 [yes 9] drawers for clothing. Plenty of tea and coffee and the kettle was free from limescale.
The bathroom was also a good size, there was lashings of hot water and the shower worked very well, no trying to hit the water to get wet. The whole decor was clean and tidy. Small areas on the grouting that had discoloured, but like most peoples own homes I bet. the dining room was bright and airy and the tables well spaced so you couldn't really hear other peoples conversations unless you were really listening for them. There were even fresh flowers on each table. The breakfast was of a very good standard with a number of choices that even incuded kippers. This was all served by smiling, pleasant waiting staff who couldn't be more helpful. The evening meal was 4 choices, plus vegetarian, and 3 courses. The food was great, freshly cooked and hot on arrival to the table. Lounge bar and function room were well decorated with clean modern furniture. The manager, Kevin, has a wealth of amusing tales, and knowledge of the area. We found all the staff, helpful, pleasant and polite whilst retaining their professionalism. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, or staying there again, it was great. I'm not sure of the criteria for 2* or 3* but I remain very surprised this hotel is a 2*. The railway station is directly opposite the hotel, and the hotel parking is in the museum approx 90yrds away on the same side of the road. There is also a paper shop opposite and a stroll into town takes less than 10 mins, and i mean a stroll. A brisk walk would get you there in 5mins
