Have been visiting Andrea & Dougie's fabulous B&B since they first took it over in 2001 and 8 years later we're still going back for more!
If thoughts of a B& B conjure up images of candlewick bedspreads and avocado bathroom suites then you have never paid to visit to Walker Ground Manor!
Although it is tucked out of the way up a narrow lane reached via a small estate of bungalows (don't panic - just keep going!) Andrea & Dougie's clear directions get you there very quickly (just remember to tuck in those wing mirrors before negotiating the gateway into the car park :-)) and the fabulous stay that you will have at Walker Ground is well worth the trauma of meeting the butcher's van half way up the lane and having to reverse the whole way back down again - Eeek!
The house is lovely. The rooms are spacious, elegantly decorated with fabulous fabrics ,warm period colours and beautiful furniture. The bathrooms are well equipped and are larger than average with seperate showers and baths in each of the rooms in the main house.
We have stayed in all of the rooms over the years that we have been visiting and every one of them is equally inviting and comfortable.
We would especially recommend the veranda room for those guests with dogs or older children (Seperate adjoining bedroom) but our own children have been happy to 'bunk up' with mum and dad on the surprisingly comfortable ZBeds that can be put up in the bedrooms if you wish. Our personal favourite is the front bedroom with the fabulous 4 poster bed and deep roll top bath.
Andrea & Dougie are fabulous hosts - nothing is too much trouble, they are friendly, have a fabulous sense of humour and are very good with children of all ages.
Runners, walkers and sailors only need to ask Dougie who is the 'font of all knowledge' in these matters for good advice and tips for the best walks etc. Anyone looking for good shopping and restaurants need no look no further than Andrea for inspiration :-)
The extra little touches that Andrea has added to the rooms make all the difference - wine glasses, a corkscrew & bottle opener, tea towel, lots of magazines, wooden coat hangers, sewing kits, hand creams, hairspray, deodourant, shoe polishing etc as well as bottled water, irons & ironing boards in every room and a wonderful selection of teas/coffee biscuits etc are rarely found in your average B&B. Also no nasty plastic cartons of UHT milk if you don't want it - fresh milk is provided for guests every day stored in a little fridge in the dining room and transported to your room in a little thermos - genious! (the fridge can also be used to store any stronger beverages that you might need during your stay!)
The breakfasts are great and Andrea & Dougie make a point of using only local produce and Andrea's cooked breakfast (ably served by Dougie) is to die for - (no need for lunch) In summer breakfast is served in the conservatory overlooking the gorgeous gardens and in winter guests are moved into the dining room with it's beautiful dark wood furniture and open log fire.
There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants around Walker Ground for evening meals and Andrea & Dougie have always been happy to ring and make reservations for us in advance of our visits ( a real bonus in peak season when the pubs and restaurants are particularly busy) Alternatively, if the weather is good we can recommend buyng in bread etc from the local supermarket and having a picnic on the lawn or on the large table in the the beautiful Walker Ground garden - fantastic!
TV reception can be poor but every room has it's own DVD/CD player as well as radio so those of you with young children can take a supply of their favourite DVD's to keep them amused if the weather is poor (though Andrea & Dougie do have a small selection of DVD's available in the guest lounge)
All in all a beautiful spot - it won an award recently for best B&B in Cumbria (sorry Andrea & Dougie can't remember the exact title but it's a beautiful trophy ) and it is an award that they definitely deserve - pay them a visit - SOON!
