“Trying hard...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

We enjoyed our short stay at the Sun Inn recently, though we were slightly disappointed that we couldn't have the four poster room that we had booked (there was an issue with the electrics in there, apparently) so we were given a family room, and a complimentary bottle of wine instead, to go with our evening meal. The room was very pleasant, and has clearly been recently refurbished & re-decorated, though, to be honest, I think it would be a bit tight for space if you had 2 adults and 2 children in it (it had a large double bed and 2 bunk beds, so I'm presuming it can be booked for 4) The bathroom, like the bedroom is really well appointed, but is, unfortunately, rather "tight" on space. It was fine for one person to use at a time, but I think it would be difficult to bathe children in. I also felt that the heating in the bathroom could do with a boost - it was particularly chilly in the morning. We enjoyed our evening meal - both the service and the food were good, as was breakfast.

Had a great stay here along with 10 friends when we visited the Lakes to walk up nearby Helvellyn. The Landlord and Landlady John and Jane were very helpful and made everything very easy. We stayed 2 nights and on the 2nd night had 4 more friends joining us. John was excellent and made up extra beds in some rooms so we could all stay together in the same pub. Nothing was too much trouble.

All the rooms were clean, comfortable and of a good standard. John told me he has plans to re-do a couple of the bathrooms but these were not bad and this is clearly part of ongoing program of work that must be nearing completion as the standard was generally high.

Downstairs the bars and restaurant were clean, smart and welcoming with open fires. Also as it's December tasteful Christmas decorations added a nice feel to the place. The bars were busy in the evenings and this was in December so the pub must be popular with locals as well.

We had 2 evening meals at the pub, both of which were good quality pub meals. Breakfasts were excellent with cereals, fruit, juices etc and the full english one of the best I have had for a long time with proper bacon and sausages - not cheap, reconstituted horrible stuff like you get in some places.

All in all a very nice place to be with welcoming, helpful staff and good rooms and food. Also in a cracking location on Ullswater in fab countryside. Can't ask for more than that!

I would be very happy to return here with friends or family. Thanks John and Jane!

Just got back from the sun inn after a lovely treat from my other half for my birthday...we have stayed before but its changed hands since last time we were there...the superior room was lovely and the four poster was so comfortable.had a great nights sleep. We ate both nights in the hotel because having eaten the first night..didn't want to go anywhere else the second night..the food is 1st class..both had the steak and it i've never tasted steak like that..it was delicious..the only gripe i have is the breakfast room..just seems a bit dark and cold..could do with a make over would have thought the modern decor in the bar area would have been followed through to the breakfast room ..but apart from that..Alex and his staff are so friendly..thanks again for an enjoyable stay...just ashame we had to come home!

Room Tip: the superior room is great. at the front of the hotel

We come to Hawkeshead every year with our friends and have stayed at the Sun In three years running. The rooms are always clean and comfortable, the staff are always friendly and helpful and there is a great atmosphere in the bar. The breakfast is really good but we were never impressed by the evening meals. This year we ate out, only to be told afterwards that the menu at the Sun had been revamped and was now very nice. We are hoping to pay a visit early in the new year and will give the resturaunt a try again. All in all we always feel nice relaxed when were there, and thats what weekends away should be all about.

Arrived cold wet and hungry. Sat next to the lovely roaring log fire, drinking mulled wine. Alex behind the bar explained we had missed the lunch menu but would be serving again at 6 so we went for a wonder around the very picturesque village and arrived back to have an amazing meal.
All 4 of us chose different from the menu. The mussels I had for starter were the largest and tastiest I have ever had and the King Henry lamb was succulent with beautifully cooked veg. The prices are a little more than you would normally pay in your run of the mill pub, but this isn't a run of the mill pub and neither is the food.
The pub has a great atmosphere and is very busy with drinkers as well as eaters.
All the staff were very friendly and we will definitely be returning next time we are in the Lakes.

We had a really nice stay here when visiting friends in Pooley Bridge.
The staff were lovely and friendly and very accommodating nothing was too much trouble for them.
The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable.
The food was reasonably priced excellent quality and plenty of it.
All in all a really nice place to stay

We booked into this lovely place and enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night.
The food was delicious,The fish and chips was fresh and ENORMOUS. My Partner tried 3 different mains and loved them all. The portion sizes even beat him!! You choose your breakfast from a tick list the night before and can select a time to suit you, and the choice was very varied, The selection of local beers was excellent. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. We were present when they were dealing with a family with very complicated dietary needs and managed to cater for them all.The room was very clean and fresh and the bed was very comfortable. The location is perfect, We spent a day visiting Angle Tarn via a trip down Ullswater on the local ferry, We had a wonderful extended weekend thanks to the comfort and friendliness of Sun Inn.The only thing that made it easier to get back to work was that when we woke up it was pouring down with rain...otherwise we would have been very reluctant to leave.

Room Tip: Make sure you choose porridge from the breakfast list. It was the best I or my partner had ever tast...
