“Great new year break in a lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

My husband and I booked the 3 night New Year break at this hotel. Upon arrival, the staff showed to us to our room 'Trout Cottage', which was situated at the side of the pub. It was a beautifully decorated and very clean room with a huge en suite bathroom. We spent more time in the room than we initially planned due to illness and it was like a small home from home in its comfortability.

The deal was bed and breakfast for 3 nights along with a 5 course New Year's Eve dinner with glass of fizz. The dinner was absolutely gorgeous. Each course was a generous portion (and I eat a lot!) and was cooked and presented to a very high standard - especially as they were catering en masse.

At midnight, there were fireworks in the main square where a surprising amount of people turned up! It was a great atmosphere and a lovely way to spend the NY.

Location wise, it seems to be a good base for walkers. Hawkshead itself was quite quiet and there's not really much in the main village but if you wanted to go to Bowness on Windermere for the day, there's more to do and it's about a 20min drive away.

All in all, I would recommend The Queen's Head for NY. However, I thought the deal was quite expensive for a pub break but my husband wanted it as a treat and to be fair, everyone puts the prices up at NY. I do note that the deal this year is a little more expensive but it does include three course meals on the other 2 nights so it's probably a better deal. There are other pubs in the village which can be visited for food, but from what we ate at The Queen's Head this was the best.

Room Tip: Trout cottage is lovely

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of days recently. We loved almost everyhing about it.Beautifully refurbished rooms and an High Def tv that always worked!! We found the food exceptional with excellent service in the dining room in the evening. Very reasonably priced wine list and excellent beers. We have already recommended to friends and family....
Only downside.somebody needs to show the breakfast chef how to make scrambled egg!!.otherwise a perfect five.thanks

Can only say good things about this place, there was a whole lot of us stay here for 3-4 nights before our daughters wedding. The staff were so very helpful, courteous and nothing was too much trouble. All the rooms i saw had been renovated to a high standard and they even have rooms seperate to the main building.
On the day of the wedding we had the whole pub to ourselves and we all had lots of food and drink and a great time thanks mainly to the wonderful staff.
Big thanks to Jane and the rest of the staff.

Room Tip: Rooms out the back or in the seperate annex may be some what quieter.

We stayed one night here in June 2013, and were pleasantly surprised by the newly-refurbished and quite stylish (although not overly large) room. With LED lights and a very smart new bathroom, this was more than we expected from an old inn in one of the prettiest villages in the Lakes. The service was friendly too, and the food in the restaurant is quite good. Room rates are a little higher than some other places in the village, but worth it if you like a well-above-average room. All in all, a good choice.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are very quiet.

We took advantage of a special offer for a two night mid-week break and being an inn with accommodation, we weren't expecting to find the such nice accommodation.

The rooms have all been beautifully decorated with very comfortable beds and great shower/bathrooms. When combined with a nice staff, a traditional inn, real ale, a very good restaurant and a great location, it was a real treat.

The ONLY downside - the TV was unwatchable due to a poor signal and this needs attending to.

We got this through an offer for 2 nights B&B for £89 so for the price we weren't expecting too much despite it being rated 4 stars by the AA. How wrong we were! Superb rooms, furnished really good and modern We were in the courtyard rather then the main building but maybe this was an advantage as the room was excellent. The breakfast was really good, plenty of choices and the full english breakfast was lovely. The evening meals are a bit pricey, typically £7-£8 for a starter and cheapest main meals starting at about £15. There was no 'light bite' tyoe menus available on an evening which was our only gripe. However, that doesn't detract from the positives and the excellent service from the very friendly staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the courtyard, there's only 3 rooms but ours was excellent. I can't commen...
