My wife and I took a two night mid-week break at the Swan having stayed previously a couple of years ago. We were more than a little concerned to read some of the more recent reviews complaining of poor over priced food and surley staff and as a result we decided not to prebook an evening meal. Upon our arrival we were greeted by cheerful reception staff who immediately made us feel welcome and efficiently and speedily deal with all the booking in proceedures. Already starting to feel relaxed, we were shown to our room (an Executive) which had obviously just been refurbished and was perfect. Thinking now that we ought at least to see what food was on offer, we went to the bar for a drink and to look over the menu. The bar-man was perfectly friendly and helpful (despite previous reviews) and the menu was just fine. Not earth shattering haute cuisine but good quality pub grub cooked from locally sourced ingredients. Having decided to 'eat in' we weren't disapointed. Firstly the bar-man remembered our earlier drinks order which I just thought was a nice touch and was fully offay with Chef's, Specials of the day. The food when it came was nicely presented and more importantly tasted great. I had the butter-nut squash filled ravioli and my wife had the 'Catch of the Day'. The next morning, breakfast was served in the restaurant and I had the full English version which was one of the best I'd had in years. Local ingredients and a good cook obviously makes all the difference. The whole process was repeated the following evening with different choices off the menu but the end result was the same, good food and friendly service. We ended up thoroughly enjoying our two night stay at the Swan and would certainly recommend the place to anyone looking for a short break good food and comfortable friendly accomodation.
