“A lovely mid-week stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

My wife and I took a two night mid-week break at the Swan having stayed previously a couple of years ago. We were more than a little concerned to read some of the more recent reviews complaining of poor over priced food and surley staff and as a result we decided not to prebook an evening meal. Upon our arrival we were greeted by cheerful reception staff who immediately made us feel welcome and efficiently and speedily deal with all the booking in proceedures. Already starting to feel relaxed, we were shown to our room (an Executive) which had obviously just been refurbished and was perfect. Thinking now that we ought at least to see what food was on offer, we went to the bar for a drink and to look over the menu. The bar-man was perfectly friendly and helpful (despite previous reviews) and the menu was just fine. Not earth shattering haute cuisine but good quality pub grub cooked from locally sourced ingredients. Having decided to 'eat in' we weren't disapointed. Firstly the bar-man remembered our earlier drinks order which I just thought was a nice touch and was fully offay with Chef's, Specials of the day. The food when it came was nicely presented and more importantly tasted great. I had the butter-nut squash filled ravioli and my wife had the 'Catch of the Day'. The next morning, breakfast was served in the restaurant and I had the full English version which was one of the best I'd had in years. Local ingredients and a good cook obviously makes all the difference. The whole process was repeated the following evening with different choices off the menu but the end result was the same, good food and friendly service. We ended up thoroughly enjoying our two night stay at the Swan and would certainly recommend the place to anyone looking for a short break good food and comfortable friendly accomodation.

Stayed at the end of February with my partner. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who explained meal times and directed us to our room. The room had a view of the fells and was very clean. Food was simple but of a high quality with plenty of choice. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choice including pastries, cereals and cooked breakfasts. Staff were all friendly and attentive throughout our stay. Thank you!

We have stayed at 'The Swan' several times a year for many years. We have never been disappointed. The newly refurbished rooms are really gorgeous, new carpets, curtains, comfy armchairs, and complete new bathrooms with stand alone showers and separate baths. A great new addition was the safe, the TV's have all been upgraded to freeview so lots more channels and Ceefax, great to keep an eye on the snowy road conditions! The rooms are spotlessly clean and are lovely and cosy, a must in the coldest March in 50 years! Deep snow and gale force winds outside but all cosy and warm inside. Breakfast as always was piping hot and staff asked if we needed more toast, tea coffee etc, The dinner menu had lots of choice and everything was perfect. The downside? ........ the end of our stay! Thank you to Jason, COLIN :) Michelle, Colin, Scott, Anthony, Marina, Inma, Neil, Rob and all the kitchen team, Alex, Colin, Nick, Colin........mentioned you so many times Colin as our last review missed out your name. We'll see you all soon. Thank you all again x

We held our wedding ceremony at the Swan Hotel Grasmere on 16.3.2013. Jason the Manager had been a tremendous help in the run up to the wedding day and on the day itself all the Staff were mangnificent. The Ceremony ran smoothly and was followed by the wedding breakfast which was first class. The refreshments at the evening reception were great and nothing was too much trouble for any of the Staff. For all of us that stayed at the Hotel the bedrooms were clean, fresh and very well equipped and comfortable. The bridal suite had a four poster bed. The setting for this hotel is breath taking and we had pictures taken in the garden. We would fully recommend this Hotel for smaller weddings and holidays. We were fortunate to wake in the morning to a "winter wonderland"

At last, the long overdue refit! We stayed in the excecutive rooms which now have a new bathroom and are repainted. Along with the refit comes a new menu and much better service. Last year we stayed and my review title was diappointed, the only reason we came back is that the Oak Bank was shut the week-end we wanted but pleased we gave the Swan one more try. Macdonald Group have finally brought it under their wing with higher standards that this lovely old coaching inn deserves.

I agree with other reviewers who rate this hotel with high marks. When my husband and I travel in the off-season we don't make reservations - so when we rolled into the lovely village of Grasmere we decided to spend the night there. It was our 20th anniversary and this was the perfect place to celebrate. We took a loop around town in our car and ended up on the road that goes right up to the Swan Hotel. It is a handsome historic building that faces rolling fenced pastures and of course the charming town of Grasmere. Our room was inviting - the bed was full of fluffy pillows and the small table with comfy chairs by the window was the perfect place to pop a cork and enjoy our special bottle of wine. (The staff graciously let us borrow wine glasses from the hotel lounge). The view we had overlooked the side of the property where - in warmer times of the year - there are obviously wedding receptions and other formal events. The hotel itself is set against a rolling hill. As a side note, I will add that although we had an amazing trip driving through Wales, England, and Scotland - we never found a Hotel or B&B that for the value compared to the Swan Hotel. Which, I guess is what made our 20th so special.

Just had an excellent 3 night break here. Our room was one of the recently refurbished rooms, biggest bed we've ever had in a hotel and very comfy. The room was lovely and warm as well.
We stayed on dinner, bed and breakfast booking and the food was very good, breakfasts also very good. The lounges were lovely and cosy and a nice place to sit after your dinner with a coffee and complimentary chocolates. The staff were all very friendly , helpful and efficient.
It's an easy walk into the village from the hotel, Grasmere is a lovely village with a good choice of tearooms and a few shops.
We look forward to returning to the Swan next year, thanks to everyone there for an excellent break.
