“Lakeland Serenity”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

This hotel is not actually sited in Grasmere, but it is only a short distance upriver to the north of the village (presumably in Broadgate), with adequate car-parking provision and an immaculate south-facing garden.
Our room was on the first floor, overlooking the garden and had a roof terrace with table and chairs. The bathroom was a good size ; probably large enough to accommodate a separate, walk-in shower. (I am not a fan of the shower-in-the-bath set-up)
The room was also a good size with a large, comfortable bed and more than enough storage and also a few chairs.
Our stay was quiet and peaceful with no intrusive noise.
We were booked for a weekend break : two nights D,B&B. The breakfasts were excellent as were the dinners.
We didn't use the spa, but other guests seemed to enjoy the experience.
The Drying Room is worth special mention : after a typical and thorough Lakeland soaking, we were able to leave coats and shoes overnight, ready for use the following day. What a brilliant idea !
We found staff to be helpful and attentive, and we wouldn't hesitate to go back or to recommend to others. It's not cheap, but it's the Lake District, which is priceless.

Room Tip: First floor overlooking garden recommended.

I booked a 2 night Bed Breakfast and Evening Meal via an offer on Travelzoo. Although we had a long drive for 2 nights, it was absolutely worth it.

The staff were really friendly and more than accommodating. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the river at the back of the hotel. The room was comfortable, and modern with a hint of luxury.

The hotel is surrounded by some amazing scenery and is situated at the end of the Village of Grasmere.

The food was amazing, really good fine dining. Although with all fine dining portion sizes are small, with 4 courses in total we were full by the end of the meal. Breakfast was huge, with the choice of cereal, fruit, yoghurt etc followed by toast and pastries. You could then order from the menu a traditional Cumbrian breakfast, or as my husband managed the "Fell Walkers Grill". This was more than substantial!

The hotel has its own spa facility, which opens out on to the amazing gardens (as does the restaurant). The Aqua spa was lovely, especially after a long drive or a day out exploring.

It was not really a hotel I would suggest for families, more couples who want to explore the wonderful Lake District and combine it with a bit of luxury and romance.

I will definitely be returning, and cannot recommend it enough. Speaking to other guests whilst we were there, they also said how amazing the hotel was, and that they would also be returning.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have balconies or gardens. Rooms at the rear of the hotel have balconies overlo...

We have just returned from a one night stay at this hotel where we stayed in a Langdale room. Having stayed in many hotels in the Lakes this is by far my favourite. The hotel itself is beautiful and modern with a cosy relaxed feel to it and gorgeous gardens. Staff are all very friendly and polite (having read previous reviews about staff being rude I can safely say this was not the case during our stay!). Our room was lovely with a balcony overlooking the river, only downside was there was a shower but no bath. The spa was my favourite part, after a hard days walking this is exactly what you need to relax and ease away those aches and pains! Breakfast was also very nice in the restaurant overlooking the garden. The hotel itself is a couple of minutes walk from Grasmere centre where there are lots of little shops and cafes. Just a shame we were only there for the one night however will definitely be returning!

Room Tip: Room 19 had a lovely balcony overlooking the river but no bath!

Just returned from a weekend at the hotel......and we were very impressed. All the 'communal areas' were lovely. nicely decorated, in a modern/classic style. Nice lounge area, and lovely restaurant. food was excellent, good wine choice, not too expensive. very nice breakfast. As we only booked a few days before our trip , we got a good deal on a riverside suite, through 'bookings.com', it was extremely spacious, lovely decor, and spotlessly clean. Large bathroom, no bath though, only shower. The hotel is in a lovely setting, near the village, plenty of parking spaces. Very quiet. Staff were extremely professional, and very polite. Certainly would return.

Room Tip: Room 4 had a large bathroom, but only a stand up shower, no bath.

Stunning setting and a lovely hotel. Loved the spa and the balcony in the room. Even though it was cold outside the balcony was quite sheltered so we could use it. Food was lovely too, although I thought the restaurant looked a little dated.
Such an unfriendly place though. The lady checking us in was polite but totally unsmiling. The waiters were similar - extremely polite but very stiff. And on check-out, the receptionist continued her conversation with her colleague throughout and didnt speak to us at all.
Sadly, I left my iphone charger in the room when I checked out, and emailed the hotel as soon as I got home. No response. No response to my next email either. And after trying to get through on the phone a few times with no success, I gave up. A shame, because a good hotel would have sent it on to me - they know who was in the room, so it's really not that difficult.

Just returned from a lovely four day break in Grasmere. The Rothay Garden Hotel had been recommended by friends and we were very impressed. Rooms sumptuous, food first rate and staff polite, professional and friendly. Spa was impressive and gardens well maintained. Will certainly return.

We have stayed at the Rothay Garden hotel many times in previous years and decided to try it again since the refurbishment, so we booked to stay in the Garden Suite in March. It was a beautiful suite, spotlessly clean. The staff in Reception and the rest of the hotel were very welcoming and helpful. What excellent standard the hotel is, I cannot praise it enough. The food was exceptional along with the spa. It must certainly be the very best hotel in the Lake District. What a fantastic atmosphere this hotel has.

Room Tip: The Garden suite is spacious and airy and looks onto the lovely gardens
