We were originally booked into the Burnside Hotel in Windermere on a KGB two night deal with friends of ours, but the hotel had a coach booking and asked if we would move to their sister hotel, the Red Lion, in Grasmere. I thought it would have been churlish to refuse, so we moved, the offer of a bottle of wine would have been nice, as we were doing the hotel a favour, but that wasn't forthcoming, never mind, we can't all be good at customer service! It then took three phone calls to the Burnside to get confirmation of the change, by which time I was somewhat annoyed, still, the email arrived eventually.
However, on arrival at the Red Lion, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The rooms were ready when we arrived, and though we were 2 hours early there was no issue with us checking in and unpacking.
The location is great, within walking distance of the pretty little village and Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, the museum, and The Gingerbread Shop! Lots of nice coffee shops and restaurants around and I would imagine in summer it is very busy. We had a lovely stroll around and also visited the church and the Daffodil Garden, very nice.
In the hotel are large public rooms which are comfy, with lots of sofas and seating areas, and had it been warm enough, a terrance with tables and chairs. The bedrooms are clean, modern and comfortable. The bathroom was small, but had everything you need and the water pressure was brilliant. The swimming pool is in the conservatory type room, nice size and big enough to swim lengths as opposed to just laze, and very pleasant, the sports equipment in the fitness centre is very basic, but it worked for us. Though it is in a small airless room, it is probably adequate for the type of hotel.
We had our evening meals in the restaurant, and it was fabulous. Four course with coffee at £20 on special offer was a bargain. Beautifully cooked and served, and the staff were very excellent, friendly and helpful, with nothing too much trouble. We had originally decided to eat only one meal there, but had both evening meals in, it was so good. The menu changes every day too. Superb.
All the staff from reception to housemaids, bar and cleaners were happy, helpful and very pleasant.
So the change worked for us, we did go to the Burnside as we had booked spa treatments, (incidentally, the facial was one of the best I've had,) but we all agreed we preferred the Red Lion!
