“The reviews are right!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2008

We booked the Gold Rill at the last minute after reading reviews on TA.
We were looking for a quiet break and weren't disappointed - the hotel is spotlessly clean, staff very friendly and the food is excellent.
One previous review mentioned that most guests were on the "mature" side and this was the case during our brief stay. At least it was not overrun with lager swilling hen and stag groups, thank god.
Try it - it really is very good!

My husband and I have just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel.I cannot speak too highly of the service, food, bedrooms, staff and of course the wonderful views. The Gold Rill offers everything and more that you would want from a holiday. This elegant hotel offers panoramic views of the surrounding fells, delicious lunches after a morning walk, comfortable lounges and pre-dinner canapes.Dishes from the traditional to the more unusual are created from the best local produce.
We left our car at the hotel and used the very good local bus service to explore this beautiful area.Concession fares are available to pensioners holding a bus pass from Scotland or Wales. We could travel on the buses all day for £5.75p very good value for money.
We can highly recommend the Gold Rill at Grasmere.

  • Liked — The whole ambience of the hotel
  • Disliked — Maybe breakfast could have gone on a little longer 8.15 - 9.15

Our 3 night dinner bed and breakfast stay was booked by my parents who have for many years enjoyed their stay at the Gold Rill and return twice a year. This was our Christmas present from them, a short break away in the Lakes.

On arrivial the hotel is very well sitauted, located just off the road through Grasmere village, down a quiet country lane with stunning scenery and views. The hotel is very nicely appointed, bright and modern, spacious and very comfortable. The hotel grounds are superbly maintained, very pretty with excellent choice of flowers leading to a well sized outdoor swimming pool and lawned golf putting green.

The hotel has many rooms to relax in, a well presented well stocked bar, a spacious bright lounge with many comfy chairs and sofas all with stunning views of the hills and to the lake a few hundred yards away. The hotel itself is not overlooked at all, providing guests privacy and the pleasure of the enjoyment of having your meals served in the restaurant with its stunning views.

The service from all the staff was first class, very attentive, polite and likable.

Our room (room 17) was an excellent size, though could do with a bit of updating, the wallpaper was a little dated and the colours needed modernising. The room has a large window with excellent views, again, not overlooked by other rooms or properties, the only thing that can see in are the sheep !! The bedroom despite needing some modernisation was maintained to a very high standard, the bathroom had white units, though again perfectly nice and clean could do with some modernisation.

The hotel is favoured by older guests, in fact both of us aged 36 we were the youngest residents staying there (by some margin !), however it is perfectly acceptable to all age ranges. The hotel offers no evening entertainment, subtle piped music is played throughout the hotel. Given this, the hotel is very comfortable, quickly giving all guests an air of relaxation and tranquility.

The evening meal is quite superb....canopes are served from 7pm in the bar and lounge where your dinner order is then taken. The restaurant is very well managed, a very good sized room surrounded by large windows with stunning views. All the food is cooked and presented to a very high standard, interesting dishes, all very tasty. 4 courses are served, followed by coffee and mints in the lounge after. You have a different table location every evening so that you can make the most of the different vistas that the hotel enjoys.

In summary, a very high class hotel, very nicely appointed, and although favoured by older guests this should not deter any guests of any age enjoying a thoroughly relaxing time, to a hotel that offers guests the opportunity to enjoy peace and relaxation in comfortable surroundings and enjoy some of the very best food.

  • Liked — Location, very nicely appointed, superb food, views, comfort and peacefulness
  • Disliked — bedrooms need slight modernisation. Awful pan-pipe music piped in during dinner

My wife and I visited Grasmere in Seprember 07 and stayed 3 nights at the Gold Rill.
What a delight. The rooms are tastefully decorated, quiet and very comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities to hand.
The service in the hotel and the restaurant is everything one could hope for, and the food--------------to die for.
If you are in the Lakes region, this one should not be missed

We had a lovely night here in spite of good old Lake District rain. Great setting looking down to the lake and very close to the village centre, with lots of parking space. Very helpful staff - one young woman in particular was endlessly obliging when lots of us came down badly in need of hot tea after a soaking book launch on Helm Crag. Our 23-year-old son and his friend lowered the guests' age range pretty dramatically, but everyone was made to feel welcome. We even swam outside in the drizzle and that was good too.
