“Can' wait to come back.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2014

We come to the lakes every year and stay in Ambleside. We walk from there to Grasmere and we always eat at Miller Howe. We have never had a bad meal. I always want to try one of their cakes, but I am always too full after my Cumberland sausages, pasta salad and jacket potato.
We look forward to seeing you in 2014!

Thanks, Jenny S! Having been based in Grasmere for a long time now, it is great to hear how we have become part of your annual tradition. All of our cakes are made fresh on-site, so we hope you'll manage to fit one in before heading back to Ambleside on your next visit!

Thank you for taking the time to review the Miller Howe Cafe. We work very hard to give friendly customer service and tasty, fresh-cooked food so it is always heart-warming to read great comments.

“Not what I expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

attracted by the name remembered from the 1990s, we chose this cafe for lunch, at a quiet 2pm - only about 3 other couples at tables. The staff were friendly and efficient, food delivered promptly and hot. The food was good, but not outstanding. A small bowl of mushroom soup would have been more accurately described as onion soup with (some) mushroom. According to the menu it had a "swirl" of creme fraiche: in fact a barely visible clot, about 2cc. Croutons were soggy, not crisp. It was served with a warm bread roll whose consistency suggested it was reheated, rather than freshly baked. The baked potato came with a good sized portion of well presented salad with pasta, and a tasty mild lamb curry with pine nuts, that was more of a dressing than a filling. Coffees were good, decaff option was available, and the cafetiere-for -one was good value.
Very clean, the decor plain and clinical with lots of bare stainless steel - not to my taste but probably appeals to those who like minimalist style.
Prices in this location generally are high - disappointingly so in the off season when so many cafes are chasing relatively few customers - but I don't feel that the food justified the price tag in this one.

Thank you very much for your comments. The cafe is of a modern, clean design. The ratio of onion to mushroom in soup is a personal taste and we do simple, plain cooked food that presents good value for money, in a friendly environment.
Thanks for your review.

Went there twice - hard work to get a strong cup of tea on our first visit - great young man on our second visit.

“DisappointIng”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013 via mobile

We were a group of 4 cyclists and were really looking forward to the Miller Howe in Grasmere. Unfortunately the cakes we had were disappointing and the Flap Jack was dry and hard.

As all our cakes are homemade, occasionally mistakes are made and on this occasion there was a mistake made with the flap jack, it was far too dry, and if you had returned it to the front counter we would have been only too happy to replace it as it was put out for sale by mistake. Our apologies as all our cakes have got a high reputation for quality. This is why we are one of the busiest places in Grasmere, thanks for your reply.
