“Fantastic find after booking last minute!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

We were looking for a place to stay for a few nights in the Lakes on our way home to Scotland. As we had the dog with us we were limited but the Black Bull came up trumps with great reviews. All the dogs were made to feel welcome especially at breakfast where they had their own sausage. They were allowed on the bar area so it was great being able to eat inside given the weather. It was a shame that after a glorious week in the Cotswolds we arrived on a wet Friday which lasted until the Sunday but after buying some waterproofs and boots we were sorted. There were great walks nearby and of course Coniston Water. We would certainly go back and hopefully experience some drier weather.

Room Tip: Our room had a king size and single bed which made it a bit larger which was good with the dog. We o...

We recently enjoyed a two night short break at the Black Bull and we really loved it.

Although I'd booked a double, we were actually given a family room which was incredibly spacious, light and airy. We had a huge king sized bed and there was also a further single bed in the room, two arm chairs and a lovely window seat looking over the street. The bathroom was also spacious and had a very good, powerful shower.

The staff at the Black Bull were very friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome. We only managed to dine in the pub on one evening because on the first night of our stay there wasn't a spare table to be had. It's obviously very popular, so booking a table is recommended, which is what we did for the second night. The meal we had was lovely and we REALLY liked the beer! The pub actually has its own micro brewery and serves a range of excellent beers. We sampled a few and they were all very good indeed - especially the Old Man Ale.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. I think it's an ideal base for a weekend's walking in the Coniston Fells and I hope we will have an opportunity to stay here again one day - especially if we get that lovely big room!

Can't fault the food, plenty of it
Good service, but it does get very busy, and they do say to come early to avoid disappointment because they cook from fresh. Steak was amazing, and a good deletion of local beer.

we were holidaying in Coniston and as there were quite a few eateries about, we were spoilt for choice. the Black Bull serves up very good food, a little pricey but still worth it.
the ales come from a micro brewery an di love the idea of the "Beer Bats" where you cane try the beers in third of a pint glasses.
very good idea.
the place is probably the most popular in Coniston and i can understand why.

We visit here every time we come to the lakes. We pass other pubs to get here and it is well worth it. If you like real ales there is no better. This pub is adjoined to its own brewery, and they make a wide range of delicious ales. You must must must try the Infinity IPA. The best IPA ever, my Fiance agrees, and he has worked in the pub industry for years.Loads of seating outside, a perfect place to sit at teatime after a busy day, the sun stays on the tables in the evening. The chips are gorgeous and crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, and red hot every time. Sandwiches etc are reasonable, main meals slightly pricey, but always look amazing and homemade. Specials change every day/2 days even the soup so everything is fresh.Hopefully we will be back in the lakes very soon as my mouth is watering for that IPA! Oh and also, the staff are always lovely and very happy even when stuck inside in the summer.

The perfect place to restore the thousands of calories burnt from walking up Wetherlam or the Old Man.

We have eaten on twenty nights in Coniston in the last three years. We've tried the Yewdale (cheaper , speedy service but not as 'home cooked') or the Sun Inn (nice location, but average food) and always end up at the Black Bull.

On a beautiful Sunday you do not have to look far for an excellent Sunday roast when in Coniston, Lake District. Although the dining room does not normally open until 6.00 pm four of us we were allowed to sit in a pleasant dining room well set for evening meals. Three different meals between us were all rated very good. The inn itself was quite full with Sunday tourists and serious walkers, many sitting outside in the sunshine. Service was both friendly and excellent but be prepared to wait if there are many people around. Main meals are pitched around the £10 to £15 mark but items with chips are available for less.

Room Tip: Cannot comment on room availability as we were only there for lunch.
