“Great location, good value hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Spent 2 weeks here in June. Fantastic location for a walking break, situated in the shadow of some classic fells. Food is good, kitchen is large but basic. Shared rooms are reasonable but could do with a bit of TLC - but that's hostel living for you!

Would stay again - it's the location that sells this great little hostel!

I just had a weekend of walking from this youth hostel which included the Old Man of Coniston and Tarn Hows. I would like to give this hostel a big plug for being exactly what it is, which is a proper no frills youth hostel with a real fire, large kitchen and lounge as well as spectacular views out of every window. The staff are generous helpful and attentive without being intrusive. The 1.5 mile track from Coniston can be a bit tricky after dark if you are not familiar with it but the destination is worth it.

This YHA is nestled at the top of a steep single track lane slap bang in the middle of the mountains! The road up does need care taken to navigate, but that said I managed it in the dusk in my 1.2 Clio, so it is not all that bad. The views in the morning were stunning and its the perfect starting point for a climb up the Old Man via Swirl Howe.

You are a mile away from the nearest pubs/shops back down the darl track...so take everything with you you that you need, or buy from the on-site shop.

The accommodation itself is basic YHA, it is clean, tidy and functional. It looks as though the owners are in the middle of modernising various bits though. There were new oak tables and comfy high back chairs in the dining room, 2 new cookers in the kitchen and some of the mattresses look to have been replaced recently.

The kitchen, dining room, breakfast bar, showers toilets and 1 8 bed dorm are on the lower/ground floor [the hostel is on a slope]. On the first floor are 3x4 bed dorms and 1 x6 bed dorm. There is also the communal lounge and a single shower.

The big bonus on a cold winters eve is the open fire in the communal lounge. The old Coppermine workers house has a very cosy feel to it.

I stayed there as part of a group on the Escape2 scheme, and we had excellent service from the hostel owner and the volunteer hostel manager.

My only 'negative' comments would be that a toilet on the 1st floor would be handy, more showers possible and the kitchen could do with being renovated.

I booked a weekend at Coniston Coppermines YHA for sole use for a stag group. It accommodated 18 of us perfectly.
1) The location - it would be difficult to find a more beautiful and dramatic spot for a hostel, b&b, 5 star hotel, or any accommodation! Yes, you might burn your clutch out getting up there, but you're in the lake district - you should be walking up and down!

2) The service - Even though we had sole self catering use, Andy from YHA was on hand if we needed him. He was extremely helpful and went above and beyond to help us out, without being intrusive. He operated the bar, and even organised a barrel of local real ale for us.

3) The accommodation - is basic, but the bunk beds are fine, the kitchen well equipped, the common room is comfy.

I would 100% recommend Coniston Coppermines YHA to family and friends, and to fellow trip advisors.

Just spent 2 nights here in the most beautiful location. Staff friendly and helpful and breakfast was delicious at only £4.95 per person. Mattress was a little uncomfortable although after all the walking I slept like a log. Will definately be back.

Coppermines is a great place for a group weekend - I had my 60th birthday there five years ago and have just been back with another group of friends on a fund raising weekend. Its cosy, quirky and compact with magnificent views and right under the Old Man of Coniston and Wetherlam so excellent for walks and convenient for the village whilst being remote enough to be special. The dining room is a little cramped when the hostel is fully booked (26 beds) but we managed, and have enjoyed two very successful weekends on the 'Escape to' option.
