“"welcoming...NOT!'”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

My boyfriend and I had been there the previous night when the food was ok although we felt uncomfortable eating but because it was so near to our campsite thought we'd give it another go with our friends.

We went to the pub with two other couples and found that you could cut the tension in the room with a knife! It is literally the quietest pub I have ever been in...none of the other diners were talking to each other whilst the eagle-eyed landlord stared at everyone from behind the bar making sure no-one relaxed or had any fun.

He reserves all the tables in the pub so he can decide whether he likes the look of you as you walk through the door. We asked if he had a table for 6 and were ordered to go to a table that was quite clearly a four seater...so after looking at the menu and feeling very cramped with 6 of us round the small table we saw one was vacant near the window with 6 seats. We therefore moved to this table, which was more comfortable for us and my dog before having the landlord march up to us and rudely tell us to move because this was reserved for a table of 5 one less than our party. After this we decided to vote with our feet and leave.

DO NOT GO HERE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you want a pub with atmosphere and friendly stay where you can relax and enjoy a drink and some decent pub grub with your friends.

“very average meal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

My husband had steak and I had lasagne, we had 1 drink and the bill came to £28. It was ok but chips and onion rings were frozen not freshly made and the lasagne was decidedly mediocre.

“nice n cosy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2012

Little olde pub with proper fire, beams n brass etc. Reasonable prices. My food was fine but my girlfriends new potatoes were well undercooked. Staff were ok, they were not friendly in nature but the service was quick. We were not asked if the food was ok- the woman looked at the plate of left over potatoes and whisked them away before we could offer them feedback. The beer was fine though. About the best place in Coniston to eat I suppose but thats not a hard thing to achieve.

“Rude owners, terrible attitude”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2012

No sooner had we arrived we were informed they were closing soon & it was last orders. No problem there, time for a quick pint & then back to the campsite so we thought.
No sooner had we sat down with our drinks than the owner was shouting at us to hurry up with our drinks because he wanted to close up & prepare for breakfast for the guests.
He kept standing over us to hurry us along whilst regaling us with stories of how he is sick of 'people from the campsite'.
Why serve us if there isn't time for us to actually drink our drinks & you are so sick of people from the campsite?
Fawlty Towers sprung to mind......

“The Ship Inn - the best in Coniston”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2012

We spent a great week in Coniston and ate out most nights. We picked The Ship Inn for our last night and had a great meal at sensible prices. The lamb shanks were lovely and tasty and the veg and chips terrific. The beers were good too and there was a nice warm friendly atmosphere about the place which was obviously very popular. Great food at excellent prices.
