“Great walking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Fab walking for a family stroll or opportunity to extend into Dow Crag and the horseshoe for a more strenuous walk. Can approach from several directions and either walk to join one of the well trodden mountain paths, or actually drive up from Coniston village to the foot of the actual mountain.
The Old Man itself is not too strenuous a walk and is manageable by most reasonably fit people (my daughter first did it at 7 years old). Mostly suitable for dogs - if you take a dog, take care as there are a few drop off points where you could lose your canine friend. Dow Crag is a fab extension but with VERY SEVERE drops and you need to take great care if you add this route on with children and / or dogs. Dogs have fallen from here as it is a sheer drop.
You can also walk over towards the Ulpha Valley direction if you are with two cars / transport arrangements. Maps are widely available in the village (there is nothing in the car park) and it is recommended that you take a guide with you as mists can come down which are quite disorientating if you don't know the routes. If you do get lost, don't be afraid to ask - most locals will know the most direct route back to base.

“Great walk”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

An easy achievable walk which I have done numerous times growing up. This time we took our 12 month old son in his rucksack carrier and he loved it.

Personally I would recommend going up the Coppermines Valley to the east of Levers Water up to Wetherlam or Swirl Hawse and follow the ridge around to The Old Man of Coniston then follow the main tourist route down. This way it is quieter for much of the route and a lot more chance to see the scenery.

“STUNNING VIEWS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

The start of our walk was almost off putting as the path up was nearly vertical, but once we got up the views were great

“Least favourite of Lake peaks but still worthwhile”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Views from the top are very rewarding over Dow and there are very good ridge walks to be had. It's not a personal favourite because it has been so hacked about by man, and is often very crowded. However it's still an unmissable peak in the Lakes, not least because of its position in the south. Good link up with Swirl How, Wetherlam etc - a path less travelled.
