Fab walking for a family stroll or opportunity to extend into Dow Crag and the horseshoe for a more strenuous walk. Can approach from several directions and either walk to join one of the well trodden mountain paths, or actually drive up from Coniston village to the foot of the actual mountain.
The Old Man itself is not too strenuous a walk and is manageable by most reasonably fit people (my daughter first did it at 7 years old). Mostly suitable for dogs - if you take a dog, take care as there are a few drop off points where you could lose your canine friend. Dow Crag is a fab extension but with VERY SEVERE drops and you need to take great care if you add this route on with children and / or dogs. Dogs have fallen from here as it is a sheer drop.
You can also walk over towards the Ulpha Valley direction if you are with two cars / transport arrangements. Maps are widely available in the village (there is nothing in the car park) and it is recommended that you take a guide with you as mists can come down which are quite disorientating if you don't know the routes. If you do get lost, don't be afraid to ask - most locals will know the most direct route back to base.
