“Serious walk to the top!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

The Old Man is a serious climb but you really don't need to climb to the top to see some wonderful views. Well worth a go but sensible footwear is a must, the slate gets ever so slippery when wet, which it usually is!

“Short but steep route up.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

Give your legs a work-out and climb the path from the car park at the foot to the summit. Excellent views on a clear day.

“More difficult than you think”

We walked the Old Man of Coniston and it was more difficult than we thought, but we were so proud when we completed our route in 4 hours.

“What a view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

I recently walked up The Old Man of Coniston with my 11 year old daughter and 5 year old son. I had been advised by some other walkers at the start of the hill walk, that I should not attempt it with 2 young children as it was tricky, especially after it had been raining. We decided to make our own decision, and took it steady.
My kids moaned for the first hour, but I managed to keep them interested, looking at the views, the mines, the waterfalls and streams and "count the cairns" - a game we played and each time we reached one, added our own stone, and were allowed a sweetie! We had company on the way up, a few people commenting on how well the children were doing, which was great motivation for them. We were extremely lucky with the weather, and as we reached the trigg point, the clouds broke and it was perfect sunshine! I was VERY proud of my dinkies, what an achievement for them! They both admitted that they had a great time and glad they had done it. The views were AMAZING over Coniston water and the surrounding hills.
Once back at the bottom, we hot footed it to the Yewdale Inn, for a well earned steak & ale pie. Yum, food never tasted so good!
