“Good Value for what you pay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2010

We stayed for three nights, and could not fault the staff as they were two members that had to serve meals and take care of bar, and check people in.
Room was ok and carpet could have done with a good clean, but otherwise room was good value for what you pay, breakfast was excellent, and also had two evening meals with the Black Rock Steaks excellent on he first night, were it cooks at your table.
The second nights meal not so good, starter of duck terrine very dry, and when main couse came looks as if kept warm under grill, as veg and potatoes very hard and dry on top.
Look out for room near main entrance to lower floor, as it's a fire door, kept banging late at night and earlier morning with people coming and going.

We have stayed here many times and feel right at home. The staff are always friendly and maybe it is just me but I love to see familiar faces when returning to a hotel. The staff know who we are and what we like.. they go out of their way to make our stay comfortable. See you again soon

We stopped for three nights as local festival happens in fields nearby (Cockrock) the hotel is warm, comfortable and friendly. It was so nice to be able to get up, shower and have a really tasty and well prepared 'Full Cumbrian' breakfast. I suspect that some places would turn their nose up at festival goers but a numebr of us were made welcome and an area was set up to leave muddy wellies/bots in. A very pleasant stay in a lovely part of the country very handy for Keswick and the Cumbrian coast at less money than many of teh Hotels within the Lakes.

i was staying in that area and found the room not made up on some days and was told to make it myself in future. the rooms needed decorating especially the bathroom and the dining room was old fashioned with pine furnature and the flies were really annoying when food was present.hotel located on a busy roundabout on a motorway and some 10 minute walk into town.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are basic but are large, modern, clean and comfortable. Good choice of food and big breakfast. Excellent value.

when we entered the room, there was an overwhelming smell of urine.
under the bed had clearly not been cleaned as there was dust and childrens pencils etc.
on the window sill there was a cup stain and in the bathroom, there was no soap, shampoo etc.
we went to the desk to report this but no-one came to the desk and after 10 minutes i left a note asking for these matters to be addressed.
still, nothing.
i rang up when i got home and the attitude was "tough"
after speaking to other patrons, this kind of stuff goes on quite alot and the management never do anything to recompensate or rectify any of the complaints they recieve.
we will never visit there again and neither will any of our family or friends.

  • Disliked — food, cleanliness of room, blase attitudes

We used the hotel as a stop off point on the way to Scotland. We were a little disappointed firstly with the location of the hotel as it is on a very busy road junction. We had booked it as it accepts dogs. According to the AA Pet Friendly Guide, there is an onsite exercise area for dogs but this is just the hotel car park and surrounds.

The decor in the corridors is very dull and reminiscent of a budget hotel (we were paying £99 for the room) On first inspection of our room it seemed to be clean and well kept, but we then found a discarded chewing gum wrapper on the floor and, on trying to find a dropped earring, I encountered a previous occupant's discarded piece of biscuit under the bed which was rather off-putting. We had a family room and my son's bed was a fold out sofa which creaked quite loudly everytime he turned in the bed.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good but the service was poor. We had booked in advance and were asked to wait on the sofa in the restaurant on our arrival, from where they took our order, I couldn't quite understand this one as there were plenty of prepared and empty tables but we were not shown to our table until the food was being served. We ordered wine but they forgot to bring it to us and had to be reminded so that did not arrive until after we had finished our starters. Also, one waitress of Eastern European origin, whilst efficient, was incredibly surly and unsmiling (the next day at breakfast she served our toast with the comment of "the butter is over on the counter", taking self service a little bit too far I think!)

Overall, not a very enjoyable stay. On our return from Scotland we stayed at the Westmorland Hotel at Tebay and the difference in level of service, cleanliness etc. showed what the Shepherds Hotel, with a little more effort, could aspire to.

  • Liked — Good food and friendly receptionists
  • Disliked — Level of cleanliness and service in the restaurant
