We have dined here for over 25 years on and off, back when it was called the Roundabout and under several regimes of different management.
We have always enjoyed the food on offer here, but we think the staff are a little "over the top" with their attention. This is only since John & Helen have been in charge and I think they may be trying a little too hard to work to a formula.
So, good marks for food and quality, but marked down for "over professional service" as you will find out shortly.
On entering the Belle Vue, the staff are dressed very correctly in their black pants and white shirts. You will be approached on entry and allocated to a table of the staffs choice, so be aware of this and be ready to ask to sit somewhere else if the proffered seats are not to your liking. You will be asked if you want any drinks and they will be brought to your table. Your menu choices will be taken and the food brought to your table. You will be offered sweets followed by the bill.
That's it - a very formal dining experience where everything is planned on a flowchart and executed with little variation between customers. Fine if that's what you want.
Watch out too for lots of "yes sir" and "yes madam". In my opinion, it would appear that mine hosts are attempting to nurture their staff to move on to work in the Hilton or the Ritz.
So, very sorry Helen and John but we won't be coming back soon. It's just not our cup of tea, but appears to be fine with other peoples.
Shame about the confusion with the special offer steak menu which I read about below. Seems the issue could have been better resolved . . . ?
