“Traditional pub with similar fare”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Well publicised and advertised, the Drukne Duck Inn is a small country pub at the top of ill overlooking Ambleside. The decor is pub style and fairly run-down, possibly deliberatley. Log fire, friendly staff - just as you wuld expect in a British pub in winter. The lunch-time menu is limited but the food is pretty good eg fillet steak sandwiches, cold sandwiches, souffle etc. The dinner menu is fuller but the prices are fairly high andsome of the items require 2 to share - not always the best way.

Good beers.

Unsure whether it is really worth the journey up narrow winding roads when there are so many good eatin places in Ambleside itself.

“Welcoming gastro pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

What a place to stop at for a reward after a vigorous walk. Having taken the ferry across Windermere (from Bowness) we walked the 10-11 km via Far Sawrey and Hawkshead to the Drunken Duck. And what a treat. Log fires, welcoming staff and comfortable traditional wood surrounds. The lunch menu is not quite what the evening can offer, but it is hearty and wholesome. There is a good balance of simple gastro fare (the sandwiches, steak, and plaice) with the more adventurous offerings (duck white bean cassoulet, pork fxxgots, haddock souffle). A dessert is a must and crumble offers the warm and wholesome end to the meal that you probably need. However, the chocolate pudding with Florentine is also quite a treat. The wine list is more than adequate, although (for me) no stunning white wine by the glass. The Rose hit the spot though. One complaint - you cannot book for lunch - which is pretty daft given that so many people walk or cycle there!

“Worth the drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

I've called in here years ago for a drink and it was packed then, always wanted to go back and finally got there last Friday in icy weather ~ worth the few hilarious skids to get there as the food, atmosphere and service were just lovely ~ a real cosy pub but with an original twist. It's just perfect.

“Best pub food ever?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Superb food in cosy pub. Lovely warming mushroom and tarragon soup with warm freshly baked roll. Then had the best steak sandwich I have ever had. Melt in the mouth beef with sweet caramelised onions and mustard mayonnaise with the crispiest chunkiest home-made chips. Sandwich made with doorstep thick fresh white bread. The food here is simply fantastic. Well worth the detour. Service and atmosphere is also great. Do yourself a favour and just go!

“Excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Wonderful interior, professional staff and exquisite food. More expensive than other restaurants but not by much considering the excellent experience.
We will certainly come again.
